Getting Ahead on Letters of Recommendation

Hey everyone,

I had a couple of questions regarding letters of recommendation. As of now, I am labeled as a competitive pre-candidate (I know this means nothing). Given that I am hopeful to be moved onto the candidate stage sometime in July, I wanted to begin seeking letters of recommendation for my nominations. My questions are:

  1. Are there letters of recommendations required once moved onto the candidate phase? For some reason I remember reading that LORs are required within the portal.
  2. If the answer to the aforementioned question is yes, would it be wise to request my LOR sources begin writing these LORs for the candidate portal phase though I have not been advanced yet?

1. The LORs aren't required but you are able to submit two.
2. The writers of the LORs will have to submit directly to your portal so you could ask for them to write the letters now and have them submit when you are officially a candidate or you could wait.

You need three LORs from school (math teacher, English teacher, other) and then you have up to two additional of your choice. The teachers must be 11th or 12th grade if HS applicant.

Are these standard LORs like hose that are required for civilian colleges or are they more like USMA’s SOEs where the teacher is required to fill out a questionnaire?

SOE forms are required for Math, English plus a third teacher of your choosing. Forms have comment area for further insight. No LOR required however up to 2 are optional from any source. I don't know if SOE Form is a accessible before portal opens. Anyone?

I am a college student. Will professors suffice? Also, do they need to come from the three categories you listed?

The three academic evaluation letters are required and are forms that must be filled out by an english, math, and science instructor (teacher or professor). Then, you may submit two optional letters of recommendation (not based on a form) that can be from pretty much anyone except a family member - usually a teacher, coach, or mentor.
