Does anyone have information on when the new calendar will be available for Class of 2013 parents? Specifically Thanksgiving break and Holiday break dates to allow for airline reservations? Thanks.

The USMA one has been out for a while now. If they are the same breaks then thanksgiving is Nov 20-29 and winter leave is Dec 20 to Jan 3. Not sure if that helps because they could be different.

Thanks very much for the link and info. At Thanksgiving break, what does "Begins LMD" mean on the first day? Looking to book early flight that day but concerned that this may mean time of leave commencement is uncertain. Any explanation would be much appreciated. Thanks.

It varies with what each specific person does that day. Some have more duties than others.

Candidate Dad: voice of experience speaking here ... do not get tickets yet. Everything is subject to change... my D's 4° year she was given an email with the LMD & got tickets accordingly. Later the official word came down with a different LMD time. In my D's 2 years at AFA we have had to change her reservations at least 3 times (fee's associated with those changes can be steep, at least once it was cheaper to get a whole new ticket and toss the unused one) ...

LMD for Thanksgiving is typically late afternoon - and that is when the cadet can leave AFA they still have to get to the airport ... Christmas will depend on your cadets finals schedule, which won't be set until fall... I seem to remember my D usually has her finals in place somewhere around Labor Day. On the return typically the 4°s have to be back at USAFA by 7:00 on the report date. Hope that is somewhat helpful!

Typically better to book the ticket for the day after LMD and you avoid cancellations altogether. Never had to rebook in my 3 years.

That would really shorten up the already small Thanksgiving break. Maybe really late the night of? There is no way your duty will take until midnight.

Thanksgiving break really isn't that short. While I understand travel is a long time for some people, if you are really desperate to get away a few hours early, is the academy really where you want to be?

I can't really see where you get that conclusion. Just because I want to spend time with my family during the holidays the academy isn't for me? I'm sorry I don't want to spend every single day of my life in school. Some people have loved ones. Even the real military has 30 days leave a year, does that mean that if you use that leave the military isn't for you? And I wan't being desperate, I was giving a parent advice on how to have their child with them a bit longer, I'm sure that's what the parent wants, especially when they pay a few hundred dollars to see their child they deserve as much time as possible.

That's not what I said, you are putting words in my mouth. Someone who can't wait to get away for another 12 hours because they can't stand where they are at should rethink why they made their decision. You are preaching to someone whose been in this life for 3 years longer than you. My response was not directed at you being desperate. Many people take the 1600 flight because its the last one of the day and just hope they might be able to make it rather than just waiting for the 0700 flight where they can get a full nights rest and didn't lose time at home.

It's not for the extra 12 hours. It's so you have the next day completely and not get there in the morning losing half the day getting there and being situated. It also depends on were you live. If you are visiting somewhere far away then flying at night is better because you will get there in the morning as oppose to leaving in the morning and getting there in the late afternoon.

Since you quoted me I thought it was directed at me also since you said "you".

I LOVE this! Trust me, after your first couple breaks, you'll be dying to come back. I'm on leave right now, and I'm counting down until Friday when I GET to go back... You'll quickly realize that all your friends are at USAFA and you don't know what to do with yourself. Or is that just me?

I think I'd like to get everything out of Thanksgiving break... America's Finest is absolutely right. Especially since it's an 8-hour trip home excluding time changes.

yup! I love florida because my USAFA friends are here. I look forward to 3rd summer period when ALL of my USAFA friends (well 90%) will be there with me! :)

I might remind both of you (friendly) that you have not been a cadet at USAFA yet to make these judgments "absolutely right."

You don't have to attend a service academy to know that after an extended period of time from home it's nice to come back and relax for a bit to spend time with your family (who miss you very much). Of course we're all different so I'm not saying you should want to, I'm just saying that wanting to get the most out of your $300 plane ticket doesn't mean you don't want to attend the academy.

300? I think it's more like 450-500 for me. I guess if we were cadets we'd know the meaning of US currency better.
