I'm starting this thread so that Falcon Scholars have an idea of who has also received a FFS and which prep schools they'll be attending.

For those not aware of what the Falcon Foundation and their scholarship is:
The Falcon Foundation was formed in 1958 by a group of retired Air Force officers, it's a non-profit organization whose mission is to help motivated students achieve their goal of attending USAFA by providing Falcon Foundation Scholarships each year.
The FFS is a scholarship towards any of 6 prep schools (Greystone at Schreiner University, Kent School, Marion Military Institute, New Mexico Military Institute, Randolph-Macon Academy, and Northwestern Preparatory School) and covers almost all tuition/room and board.
The number of Falcon Foundation scholarships awarded each year is set by the USAFA admissions office, with a max of 100 awarded each year.
You cannot apply for a FFS, it is awarded to those who qualify for admission to USAFA but are not receiving an appointment.
Upon successful completion of prep, if the recipient continues to meet admissions guidelines and obtains a nomination, they will be offered an appointment to USAFA.

Sorry if I wasn't very thorough, I had to quickly type all this up.

I am so very very hopeful the DS gets a Falcon.

If not, he is deciding between MMI and NWP (even if so, he will be deciding between the two.)
NWP is known for being one of the best prep schools for Falcon Scholars! If he does get a FFS, I highly recommend attending. You can self prep at either school, BUT without a FFS I would recommend MMI. Keep in mind that no one is guaranteed an appointment while self prepping and MMI has ROTC programs that he could apply to as a backup. If he ends up self prepping, I would contact both schools and see what's best for him. Goodluck!

Peppypea,

If your son is self-prepping, NWP is a great option. Roughly half of our 2017 class was self-prep, and the numbers of appointments are pretty good.

Most self-preps applied to multiple academies and for ROTC scholarships, and keep in mind it is not a guarantee as emtet emphasized. Work hard and it pays off.

Don't rule out the mountaintop, it's an amazing experience and preparatory tool.

Good luck to you and your son.

Awesome information! Thank you for giving your time to reply! Really, at this point, if he doesn't get a FFS it will come down to what kind of aid packages we can garner and how much we have to come up with- I have two more children graduating HS right after DS (2019 AND 2020- one decided to graduate a year early, yikes!) so money will be one of the biggest factors for us. Ah this modern (expensive) life.

DS has Falcon Scholarship and has chosen MMI since we are in FL. Any others FS SAP MMIer’s out there?

Anyone looking at MOC nomination applications yet for the fall? Wanted to see how that works since not a whole lot of new info would be added, except final grades from senior year. Not retaking SAT until October (past the deadline for having apps in). He has notified all MOC sources of FFS so I’m assuming he just continues to update apps as new items can be added as yr goes on? Same thing with USAFA app. Does he update to portal or through admissions counselor since he is FFS? Thanks!

Those of you who’s kids went to NWP what ended up being your out of pocket costs?
I went to NWP on a FFS and the costs for most people were in the low 1000s to attend the school alone. The total amount spent depends on how much of a wardrobe you have to invest in to fit the clothing standards, school supply costs, mailing costs(to ship trunks), ACT/SAT test costs, and how far you have to travel. Personally, I didn't spend much as I already had a good amount of "business casual" attire and I lived in state. While on the mountain, you don't really spend anything since you don't go anywhere and meals are provided.
I will say, please pack a warm blanket and invest in a good jacket! The cold sneaks up on you up there!

Oh geez..."the mountaintop..." and "...pack a warm blanket and invest in a good jacket...the cold..."

Okay...OLD guy here...NWP of today is SO much more "chill" than it once was...

<<<<<we take you now back to the year 1978...to a small hilltop in a small Minnesota town on the shores of Lake Minnetonka: Mound, MN. On this tiny hilltop, in a rustic neighborhood, lies NWP...run by Mr. James Hoiby. It's known by its students as "Hoiby's Hilton" in reference to the Hanoi Hilton...four or six to a small room, MN winters (how far below 0F does it go? How many times have you had ice on the inside of your window, and frost on your blanket because the window is frozen 1/8" open?), long nights of study hall, speed reading classes, the daily vocabulary test (echelon: a step-like formation of troops or planes; a subdivision of an organization.) "positive hours" of working on the hillside (45 kids got poison ivy one weekend clearing the weeds) and of course...once you were 19, walking across the frozen surface of Lake Minnetonka to the Surfside Bar & Grill.>>>>>

And who can forget the school visits to the biggest (back then) employer in the town of Minnetonka? Tonka Toys!!!

NOW??? It's a summer resort in the California foothills overlooking the beach...yep...rough life!!
:laugh::rofl::lolatyou::shake:

And all the kidding aside, it's a superb prep!!! Susan has it really well done, she learned from Jim H...and I think improved it.

In defense of the NWPer’s of 2019..the 2019 season brought a 15 year record snowfall for the area which caused a severe power outage for approximately 7 days...very limited resources and minimal heat. The group worked together to clear waist deep snow and get by until roads were able to be cleared in a remot3 area..all while continuing those grueling 200 word vocabulary test, study hall by candlelight, and the Durbeck’s leading the charge all while locals were in a panic. So the comment about the blanket and warm coat were hard earned in the usual tame San Bernardino Mountains by the Class of 2019...Teamwork Prevailed.
