Would love input and advice from others here. DS was awarded a 3 year scholarship the last board. Has anyone had success presenting this to schools to help with the first year. Possibly seeking in state tuition the first year, room and board, etc from the just the university . I know it's either tuition or room & board for the 3 year scholarship. Just curious about year 1 options.

Check with Norwich. Very generous private University.

If Norwich does anything you could be looking at around 25K out pocket for year 1. They have 3 funding avenues, Academic Scholarship , second was something they give for the student that applies early and a third I forgot what it was called but its another 2K and then whatever Federal Student Loan ( Stafford I believe ) which I think is by default 5K per year. But don't expect them to do much more. They will just throw the word FASFA up and the conversation will come to a grinding halt. As we know to get anything based on the FASFA you might as well have been living in a cave. But after that you are Golden as long as you keep a 2.75+ GPA ( Should be a given ) that is required to get Free R&B at Norwich. ( Or at least that is what I heard ) But 25K for college is a dream come true. Just as my DD who decided to go Div I Out of State. Especially when you may have paid 18K+ per year for high school :) PS Snow forecasted for this week but 60'ies a few days next week. DS is ready to go. And booked my Hotel already for Move in and Parents weekend. Otherwise you won't find a room within 50 miles. LOL

Thank you so much for the info. Norwich sounds like a amazing school. I wish DS had done more research but I think he sold his self short receiving this scholarship. We had settled on plan B in state school with nice amount of merit scholarships. You 100% correct about FASFA. Not even a factor. Unfortunately /fortunately my son just went to a out of state school to have his interview , didn't apply and didn't consider it. After meeting the ROO and seeing the program he wants to go. He applied immediately and was accepted however not in time to receive any of their merit scholarships the school offers freshmen. Since the deadline is near a friend suggested we talk to the university ,let them know has 3 year AROTC scholarship and see if they are willing to work with us on the first year. Possibly in state tuition. Not sure if that's OK to do? Has anyone had success in this situation?

Can’t hurt to ask. If the school is not ultra selective, and needs to work hard to meet their admissions goals they will be willing to work with you.

I appreciate the information. I think I'll make a phone call.

Some schools offer in-state tuition for ROTC recipients (my son's school does). Ask.

Norwich is cheaper than 25k for the 1st year. I was quoted 18k after the FAFSA (I'm an active duty Officer). They are very generous. I would look at all options, because some schools throw in free room and board. We had a few ARTOC Detachments contact us and say that if my son went there he would get all 4 years paid for with the 3yr scholarship and they would throw in the room and board. That wasn't necessary because he got upgraded to the 4 year in the last board. I can't remember all of the schools, but three of them were AUBURN UNIVERSITY AT MONTGOMERY OR TROY UNIVERSITY and Illinois Tech.

Was wondering if that included the 2,000+ for uniforms. Good for you on getting it below 20K

I accepted a 3 year scholarship to the University of Wyoming and the University contacted me to congratulate me and said that they would cover the first year tuition. They have been very helpful in this process and very accommodating. Even if they don't offer to pay for the first year tuition, they will give you instate if you meet the requirements at the link below, it makes it very affordable. With the instate, tuition is very cheap and with FAFSA money it brings the cost down a lot.

Ohio University offered to cover the first year tuition as well as the first semester room and board for my DS, the second semester - graduation room and board would be covered on a merit basis as well.

Yes it was.
My son was awarded a 4 year - and I believe we still have to pay the 2,100 for the uniforms. I would think we would have to pay for laundry service as well.

Montana State University is very generous. Currently they will bump any academic achievement award up if you simply ask. Next week they are determining if they will waive freshman tuition for national 3 year scholarship winners. More to follow!

Is Montana State accepting late applications for admission?

Welcome to the Bobcat ROO (I assume it is the ROO?).

Nice to see more representation from the 8th Brigade!

University of Idaho offers the Tuition Bridge for out of state 3 year scholarship winners. Those cadets get in-state tuition for their freshman year and are also given a $5000 credit towards room and board for as long as they live in dorms.

KLSCAD- did your child receive a 3yr AD? If so they can transfer to MSU. Please contact my ROO for assistance.
He did receive a 3AD. I will let him know about transfer possibility.

My DD received this a few years ago. I am assuming he has already accepted it to a school? I think the deadline is either passed or right now? Anyway, hopefully he talked to each ROO at each school he was offered and they told him about any supplemental offers the school has for scholarship recipients. This factored into my DD's decision (not the only thing). She went with a more expensive school, however, it offered room and board all four years and she got to use her merit aid the first year. The other thing was that the ROO at that school had said a 3.5 year upgrade was possible (one of the school's said no-way!). While the third option was out of state private, and less for that first year tuition, room and board would not of been covered any of the years. Good luck to your son, and congratulations to him and your family on his scholarship! This is just the beginning of a wild ride!
