AFROTC: Multiple Questions

1. I was offered a four-year type 7 scholarship for AFROTC. I was just cleared medically for air force. I also received a four-year AROTC scholarship, which is my first choice, but I have still not been medically cleared. I have already accepted that scholarship. Can I accept the AFROTC scholarship as well in case the army scholarship falls through?

2. In your experience, will the army and air force deem similar results on my medical status?

3. Would you recommend that I consider transferring my AFROTC scholarship to the 3 year option?

4. Lastly, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, I have heard that there are schools that will offer you full room and sometimes board if you apply your four-year type 7 scholarship to their school. Do you know of any of these schools? Which are they? Also, I qualify for in state in Washington State, Tennessee, and Hawaii. What options would you recommend?

Again, I'm planning on going Army, I just want to keep my options open just in case that scholarship is rescinded. I also don't want to do anything illegal by accepting two conflicting scholarships, but like I said, I haven't heard back from the Army medical board yet. Thanks so much for your time; any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Yes you can accept both scholarships. Once you report somewhere the other scholarship will be cancelled. Of course as a future professional, you will let them know you're not using the scholarship long before that.

Almost a sure bet that they will, keeping in mind there are never any guarantees. In fact AF has some stricter requirements than Army, especially for vision.

That decision has to be made by you. It all depends on finances and where you want to attend college.

There is a sticky thread at the top of the ROTC forum page that contains such schools. You should always confirm it with the bursar at that college as tings always change. Again, you need to do your homework and figure out where you want to attend college. Finances, available majors, distance from home, and many other factors play a part.

Again, I'm planning on going Army, I just want to keep my options open just in case that scholarship is rescinded. I also don't want to do anything illegal by accepting two conflicting scholarships, but like I said, I haven't heard back from the Army medical board yet. If you haven't accepted the Army scholarship yet then accept immediately to get the process kicked off. I have to say it seems kind of late in the season to be going through this. Especially given the answer to #2 above. But again, there are no guarantees. If you want to go Army, then I'd just go Army and let the cards fall where they may. I've always thought the service branch you desire is far more important that anything else, unless that's the only way to finance college.

Thank you for taking the time to give me that in-depth response! I will follow your advice; I have already accepted the ARMY scholarship and pursued that route. I am all set to attend Baylor University if my final medical waiver is granted. I'm not taking anything for granted, but great to hear you say that the Air Force is generally more strict on the medical. I've also observed that to this point in the DODMERB process, the notifications for both branches have been the same. The only difference is that the Army's notifications come out about a week after those of the Air Force. Thanks again. God Bless.
