Son was admitted to the USCGA for the Class of 2022. We are all flying in to bring him for July 2. What close hotels do folks like and why? Trying to decide which one to book.

There's a wide variety of hotels to fit you! Honestly, they all know it's R-day too, and the prices reflect it. I stayed at the Red Roof Inn in New London before R-day, have also stayed in America's Best Value and Clarion (I think) in New London and they're all pretty basic but do the trick. The Mystic Marriot is super nice but really expensive. Another good option is the Quality Inn in Mystic - they have an Academy rate that is, I believe, 74 dollars, but I would make that call ASAP. Lastly, if you are eligible, the Navy Lodge over in Groton is always a good choice. There are tons of hotels around, though. You could also stay in Providence or Hartford, but you'd be getting up really early to get down to the Academy, so I would spend at least the night before (if you're spending multiple nights in the area) in New London/Groton/Mystic Area. It'll be a long day and the sleep will be worth it.

Are you a member of the USCGA - Parents - Class of 2022 Facebook page? Current information regarding the local hotels that offer CGA rates has been posted there. Most families stay in the New London/Groton/Mystic/Uncasville areas, with Mystic probably being the most popular.

Yes I am a member and will look right now. Thanks so much!

Don't overlook the local Bed & Breakfasts in the area. My daughter graduated from Connecticut College , right next to USCGA a few years ago...Hotel rooms in the area get booked quickly, and we found a great B&B (Abbey's Lantern) right outside of New London. We ended up staying there the last couple visits..its about 8 miles inland, but quiet and reasonably priced.

How is Quality Inn? Saw the price in the past and immediately dismissed it thinking it might be questionable. Is it actually just a great deal for CGA families?

It isn't luxurious so to speak but it isn't seedy either!! Not questionable at all.

We have been staying at the Hyatt Place Mystic since March of 2017 when our DS went to AEP. It is not too far away and the rooms are bigger then normal. And a nice hot breakfast is included. They also offer a USCGA rate if it is available at time of booking. Just call and ask for the rate or ask for Christian, she is really helpful and will get you the best deal available. I have already booked using the USCGA rate for the next parents weekend. PM me if anyone needs anymore info.

Check AirBnb as well. Several in the New London/Mystic area. Some are nicer than others.

Does anyone know when the Mystic Flag Ceremony and Parents Weekend 2018 take place? I would like to book a hotel.
Is Mystic a day event?
I live in CT, I'm assuming it's a day trip? Any help would be appreciated! TIA!

On the USCGA website it says Saturday September 22. That is when the football game will be. Last year there was a dinner for the parents and your cadet on the Thursday prior and lots of things to do on the Friday as well like going to your cadet's classes. This year we are arriving on Thursday and will leave on Monday. Book your hotel NOW!

Do not book anything for Mystic Flag Ceremony until you know what platoon your DS/DD is assigned to! Not all swabs participate in the day as a few of the platoons will be sailing on the Eagle at that time. The ceremony is a day event where the ceremony takes place in the morning at Mystic Flag Seaport. The swabs will march in and through the Seaport, receive their class flag, and mark the halfway point of Swab Summer. Following the ceremony, they will ride back to CGA and then released for liberty with family, sponsor family, or just their fellow swabs. The liberty lasts around 6 hours if I remember correctly, from 12 - 6 or so. They must be in uniform the entire time. If you are local, as you are, I would definitely try and make it if you're DS/DD is there!

Platoon assignments should be sent out in late May/early June, giving you plenty of time to make arrangements for the ceremony.

As for hotels, my family always stayed in Mystic at the Hyatt. It was a nice break from the New London environment (where there isn't much) and it's only 10 minutes or so up 95N (easily accessible from USCGA). Niantic is also a good location, a little south of USCGA. If you're looking to stay in the NL area, the Springhill Inn and Suites has a military/government and AAA rate making it easily affordable and it's about 5 minutes from the Academy.

I don't necessarily recommend the Red Roof Inn...we use to call it the "Red Rash Inn" when I was a cadet.

Thank you! I will wait to hear about her company. I did book the Hyatt in Mystic for R day. It looks like one of the nicer hotels in the area.

We like to stay at the Spring Hill Suites on Frontage Road - nice hotel, pool, free breakfast, and about 5 mins from the front gate of the academy
