Incoming 2022 plebe here. Going through my PTR checklist, I noticed the orthodontic waiver letter and its contents. When I was 10/11, my dentist put a few braces in behind my bottom teeth (after I had my braces taken out), and said that, barring any problems, I should leave them in permanently so they can maintain my alignment.

On the PTR checklist, it says "if you do not have a waiver from the application process, then your braces must be removed". I'm not sure if these count as braces or not, because I had the "real" braces and had them removed already.

What's the best course of action? Report on I-Day with them in, and see what they have to say, or get them removed?

If they are not removable they are permanent. I recommend asking the academy directly. You may need to get a waiver or you may need to get them removed before I Day. You don’t want them to find out they are there during dental exam but you do not have a waiver to keep them.

DD has a permanent retainer behind her teeth. It was not listed on her medical forms (oversight) but noted during her dental exam at the Yard.

Thank you. It’s the wire retainer, right?

So just to clarify, it wasn’t listed on her medical records, but she reported on I-Day with them still on?

Thank you.

DS had his removed prior to I-Day. Did not want to risk injury or detached parts during boxing and other demands.

Yes to all. However the post above makes sense. She had her retainer break free during softball practice when she took a bad hop to the mouth. They did cement a new one in but I could see it causing an issue during boxing or one of the many other activities you will do over the years at the Yard.

Not sure if the same rules apply, but my sister had and still has a permanent retainer that she reported to new cadet week with at UF NROTC. Was never a problem in her case

I feel like giving a weekend special buy one get one free here. I repeat: I recommend asking the academy directly.

My DD reported on IDay with the permanent wire behind her teeth and no issues at all. She is a rising Firstie and just had it removed as it is recommended that it be removed by the age of 21.

Did she have it reported on her medical questionnaires/have a waiver for it, though? Like helmsdown's DD, I didn't report it anywhere because of oversight.

It definitely did not require a Waiver. We would have answered any questions they asked on the questionnaire, but I do know that there was no waiver process initiated. When she recently had it removed the dentist just made her a clear retainer that she can wear if she chooses to.
