Rising Cow, Ask Me Anything

1. I have heard that there will be a curriculum change starting next year. If this is true, what kind of changes can we expect?

2. What is the current policy on validating courses? What were the tests like given in Beast to determine course validation and placement, and is English still able to be validated?

Thank you.

I haven't heard about curriculum changes simply because its not something that's relevant to my class. Either way, you will still have to take core classes such as English, Math, Geography, Psychology, History, and Computing. Some courses such as History can be validated by showing your AP score. Others like English and Math require a written exam during Beast. If you do validate English, it will simply put you in a higher level; you can't skip it.

Thanks Pork, During and after Beast, how is plebe and cadet laundry handled? Dry cleaning, etc.\
Thanks.

During Beast you send your laundry out in a bag every week. Every cadet is issued a laundry bag and is given a form on which you check off the articles of clothing that you are sending out. Laundry is returned to cadets on Friday or within a week. During the academic year, taking out the laundry is a part of plebe duties. Every Monday night, cadets place their laundry, which includes dry cleaning, in bags outside of their rooms and plebes collect it on Tuesday morning and place them outside of the barracks to be picked up. You can also do your own laundry as there are several barracks with laundry rooms. However, you have to pay to do your personal laundry.

Tell us a bit about yourself. Major, what you want to branch, varsity athlete or slug, what company are you in? My son is also a 2020. Will you be cadre for beast this summer?

Should you bring everything on the suggested packing list for R-Day? What did you not bring that you wish you had and what did you take that you didn't need for beast? Thank you.

I brought everything on the suggested packing list and was fine. Don't worry about not having something because you get to visit the cadet store a couple times.

Weird questions about BCT and packing...

- does USMA issue shampoo conditioner and body wash? I feel like these are rather essential but it would be a lot to carry on r day...

Is bringing a small 6 inch desk fan worth it? It’s on the suggested list.

How many pairs of extra socks of white and black did you bring?

If we bring extra boot socks, can they be coyote brown color?

Can we bring our own shower shoes/flip flops for wearing in our own rooms during beast?

No they do not issue shampoo or body wash. These things are sold at the cadet store, but you won’t know when you will have spare time to go to the store.

They will give you a pair of shower shoes

Do you think ill be able to attend with a 3.5 gpa and a 1400 sat while doing cross country as well as academic league? What would you say my chances are?

Thank you for your service!

Just bring a small travel size bottle of shampoo and other toiletries because you will be given the chance to go to the store not too long after R-day. A desk fan is not really necessary and most people I know didn't bring one. I brought around 6 pairs of extra socks but they give out plenty of black and white socks on R-day. Boot socks can be coyote brown. And no, you can't wear your own shower shoes / flip flops anywhere.

You seem fine academically. Going in, I had a 4.1 and a 1540 but there are plenty of people here with lower scores as the average is much lower. Admissions likes to see some leadership positions so try to get one if you haven't already. Also, try to max out the CFA.

Could you tell me which of the courses may be validated though AP scores or college transcripts? I am specifically curious about chemistry, physics, and psychology.

You will get placed in a higher level course for all those classes.
