2 week NROTC Orientation - Middle of the Summer?

DS just got Fed Ex from his unit telling him that the school is having orientation for 2 weeks at Great Lakes Naval Station in the middle of the summer (last two weeks in July). I’ve always seen orientation being one week before freshman arrive on campus.

The unit is paying all transportation costs, and it looks to not be mandatory, but highly encouraged.

Anyone else have this schedule?

This new orientation is being test run with this year's class of midshipman candidates. I had the opportunity to speak with the captain in charge of all nrotc units and they are implementing more uniformity in the nrotc program with this new orientation and the "crucible" for 2/C cruise. Your DS is lucky to have this experience, the candidates get a uniform introduction to the Navy and will get time firefighting, doing damage control and a day or two at the range. Test pilot year for both programs is this year and it should be fully implemented next year.

A quick follow-up-- the candidates will not receive any qualifications in pistol, firefighting or DC, it is just an introduction. They WILL get qualifications during 2/C cruise.

Will they all be at Great Lakes?

DS also received the letter regarding the 2 week indoctrination at Great Lakes. It states that he has been selected for this program. From the wording, it seems that one should have a good reason if they are unable to attend on the dates assigned. He will be there July 22 to August 4. It states that they will be evaluated physical fitness, basic military knowledge and how they perform on tasks that require teamwork and critical thinking.

Luckily getting him there won't be a problem, we only live 1 hour away. I wonder if the new program is only being tested with units that are close to Great Lakes Naval Station. DS is going to Wisconsin but he knows that the Marquette Unit was also attending at some point this summer.

My DS will also be at Wisconsin. Marine Option. Congrats.

Would like to PM you about Great Lakes... also looking for info & may have some to share next week. But you only have 4 posts....

I’m an upcoming 3/C so I can’t speak from personal experience but to my knowledge, it is NROTC wide and all schools will be sending their incoming class to Great Lakes (Navy options at least) for this uniform training. There will probably be additional training once they get to the unit but Big Navy is making an effort to bring everyone on a level “playing field” before they report to their separate units especially since we will not be attending OCS or anything similar (Navy options) and don’t have any sort of “boot camp.” This will be the substitute for that. I may not be 100% correct but this is the way it was communicated in my unit. I go to school in CA so it is most definitely not just the MIDN from the Great Lakes area. In addition, any college programmers who entered NROTC during the school year and thus did not complete protestation with the rest of their class will also be attending (upcoming 3/C).

Orientation* not protestation....

My DS will be at UW-Madison Student orientation this upcoming June 27 - 28th. He has a meeting at the NROTC office beforehand to review required coursework. I will attend general parent orientation. When will your DS be attending SOAR?

I believe the incoming UW NROTC students are already connected on FB so they know who each other are at this point.

This will be my 5th post so we should be able to PM at this point.

DD is an incoming freshman at USD, NROTC scholarship. We’re stationed overseas now so correspondence is slow to reach us. Anyone know if USD is participating in this Great Lakes training?

Contacted USD, they’re not participating, they’re conducting their own orientation. It’s just a small pilot program at a Great Lakes at this point.

DD is University of Minnesota Twin Cities NROTC-MO and will be participating in indoc at Great Lakes. Still dealing with a crapton of AMIs through DoDMERB and hoping for a waiver, but their website is down for 16 days for upgrades and maintenance. She's got to proceed as if she's a green light until they say no waiver. Proud of her, but wow! It's taking strength and perseverance on her part!

Hoping someone who attends reports back here about it.

I got the letter for the indoc at Great Lakes, but I'm not DoDMERB qualified (pending waiver for months already). I was told by unit that I could not attend indoc since my waivers weren't granted

Really? I'm not DoDMERB qualified either (pending waiver), but I got a generic sports physical and am being allowed to go.

My DD also can attend indoc while not being medically waived, but will have to hand-deliver a sports physical from her physician saying she is physically able to complete indoc. The question is, will it end up being a waste of time if waivers aren't granted. Sure to be a learning experience whatever the outcome!
