Commissioning week

How crazy is this weekend to visit? We are driving distance. We had planned to attend Saturday. Realized it was the start of commissioning week. Looks like it starts Friday, too, although we could go then as well. We were trying to go for an admission briefing and then a walking tour to see what my daughter thought of the whole thing before she possibly attended a sports camp there this summer. All the parking nightmares aside, the admissions session is open and walking tours are open with no restrictions per the visitors office. Is this a good or bad idea?

Where would you suggest we park if we did go? Or look for another weekend?

TIA!

This weekend ? I wouldn't expect that it would be that bad.. I just looked at the Schedule (it's changed a lot in the last 30 years), and graduation isn't until Friday, and big events like PRADES and BLUE ANGELS aren't until later in the week. Ring Dance is Saturday night, but that really shouldn't affect anyone . . Hotels in the area might be harder to find, but Annapolis is a State Capital with lots of places to stay, and I wouldn't really expect the crowd to start arriving until Sunday, or even later in the week. If you can get in, this would probably be an exciting time to see USNA -- the Yard is always polished and looking good for June , ooops..Commissioning Week.

Have you been checking the weather? If you are within driving distance, you probably are getting the same rain and thunderstorms this week, and flood watch through Saturday. Forecast says it is going to rain till Tuesday - not sure if it will affect Blue Angel practice, but at least Thursday and Friday are dry with high only 77! We shall see if that holds!

With all these rains, the yard turns into puddles and POOLS!

Saturday itself won't be bad from a crowd standpoint -- until evening when Ring Dance starts. However, weather is supposed to be rainy/stormy so, if you go, be prepared. From now through the end of summer (other than middle of next week), the Yard will not be crowded other than a few days (e.g., I-Day).

I thought rain was standard issue for Commissioning Week !

Still pouring rain. Looking out my window I see an old man pairing up animals. Wonder what that's about.

Looking for a good used Ark...
Seattle is lovely, and I like to visit there, but I did not sign up for wx like this in Annapolis. What is it - Day 5? Of 6? Of The Deluge?

Yes and supposed to go until tomorrow night. My garden needs sunlight.

Rain is “nice” and if the weather forecast holds for commissioning week next week (still dry and a cool 77 on Thursday and Friday!) who is complaining?

Ok this is a good point. I knew it wouldn't be great weather, but hadn't thought about it being puddles and puddles. I know from my first daughter, your first impression of any campus is affected by the weather and whether or not school is in session. When its sunny, blue and pretty and this is tons of action on campus, it just feels different. Ugh! Don't know what to do.

Did anybody see the Preakness on TV yesterday, or in person? Very sloppy track of course but the fog was so thick I could hardly see the horses. Great race though.

The crowds are overstated. We had no issues last year during our ‘17’s CW. Was there from sat to sat. I’ve been there for two other CW’s and going to visit our ‘20 this week.

^^ Agree, while there are scheduled events for the entire week, everyone doesn't attend each event. Guests/relatives and those from out of town most likely are around closer to when the actual commissioning/graduation takes place. Good to plan ahead for hotel rooms as they book up in advance when large numbers of out of town visitors are around. Mids/parents often rent homes as it provides more flexibility. Check the weather forecast and be sure to dress appropriately for that day. Some showed up for commissioning and seemed clueless it was going to be 100 degrees and they were attending an outdoor event (with minimal shaded areas) lasting several hour (i.e. sunscreen, lightweight clothing, hat....etc). (Similar advice if rain is forecast.)

Probably true...I haven't been in Annapolis for Commissioning Week in 33 years, but the typical USNA graduating class is 1000 ish. Unless there is something else going on in town, there should be plenty of hotel/restaurant, etc. capacity. There are several events during the course of any year, including Renunions, Boat Show, football games, etc.that probably crowd Annapolis more. Of course, downtown traffic is tied up---but it always is bad. I always get a kick out of the various Parent's Club's who print a Commissioning Week guidebook, which inevitably includes some great advice like "Leave plenty of time for Midn to get back to the Yard...." After 4 years, most Midshipmen know how much time it takes to get from any point in town to their Company areas, often to the minute !

I am just back from Naptown and it was not overly crowded. We attended Herndon on Monday and saw the Blue Angels fly around today before leaving. For the first time I did not see a line at the Iron Rooster at straight up Noon. There was a 20 minute wait by 12:30.

We stayed in one of the Historic Inns and was told by the manager they were not filled and the parking garages had room. So, it seems at least for this year the beginning of Commissioning week is not overly busy.

Did they show the Navy Glee club perform? They were there singing My Maryland.
