NLI and USCGA

Being a wait list candidate, I went forward with my Plan B options and put a deposit down and committed to another school. In that process, I signed an National Letter of Intent to compete with that school. I was just offered an appointment today. I am wondering if I do end up attending coast guard, if I will lose a year of eligibility going from a D1 program to a D3.

you should ask your CGA coach - they should be able to answer this question. Which sport? Male or female?

Male, and swimmimg. I didn't contact the coach beforehand. I will do that, and see what the situation. I can't be the first person to be in this situation. Thank you!

You are a D1 commit for swimming, but never contacted the swim coach at CGA? That wasn't a good idea! It could have completely changed your admission process!
 
Thank you for the help, I started my application very late in the process and when I emailed the coach he never got back to me
 
Well you're in now! That's what matters. I hope you accept the Appointment to USCGA. Unless you plan to be an Olympic Swimmer, CG will offer a competitive swimming experience. Choose the Service then the school. As AROTC Dad said, once you're at the USCGA, you cannot cross commission to another service. That's an excellent Academy with great culture, and great service! Congrats!

Not completely true about cross-commissioning. Extremely, extremely rare but not unheard of.

Not sure if you got your answer but if you never attend the plan B school and attend USCGA there is no issue in loss of eligibility. First off D3 and in fact D1 service academies do not participate in the NLI program. My DD had a verbal commitment to a traditional school and I had to research this. I even called the NCAA and they instructed me she would be fine as long as she never competed at the traditional college. We were lucky enough to find out in early January she would be heading to USMA so we told the coach before she signed her LOI.
