IPad allowed?

They will get a packing list of what to bring when they report. They buy a laptop computer from the academy (or bring their own which has to be wiped and set up by the IT department). They can bring a cell phone which they have to turn in when they report. At the beginning they get their cell phone back once per week on Sunday afternoons for a timed phone call. They gradually earn more privileges over time. Their rooms will be inspected and contraband seized, so don't send any items that are not approved. Even if your DS/DD already has a laptop, I would stick to buying the computer and printer from the academy. More on this topic later.

Are they allowed to have an IPad?
Definitely not as a plebe.
What are plebes allowed to have?

Agree with kpmom2013; Stick to the recommended packing list in the Logging In Handbook. Nothing else. No iPad, iPod, earbuds, etc. And pack light. When we dropped off DS for Indoc, there were plebes carrying A LOT of luggage. A decent size duffel should fit everything you'll need (or allowed to have). Less is more.

Also seriously consider the laptop/printer package from KP. DS said the few that brought computers from home had issues with USMMA IT wiping their files and installing required software.

LOL, plebes can have an Ipad. Just send it to them after indoc. DoIT can hook it up to the wifi and everything, it just may take some time. But, I would not use it as a laptop replacement

KPmom, that info is a little outdated. Yes, plebes can have iPads... yes, they can access the internet with them (BYOD). Don’t send it with them to Indoc. Send it after Indoc has ended. Just don’t flaunt it and you’ll be okay.

Uh. I've been at sea for 8 months. We can access the wifi with phones and ipads now?

That is still a negative unless you happen to live real close to the Navy Federal.

No, you can connect to BYOD I have multiple devices connected to it

^ I have devices connected to BYOD... you just have to apply for it and get it renewed every 2 weeks.

I remain convinced it is not a good idea plebe year. Both my DS and DD saw a lot of their friends and roommates get set back and even disenrolled due to excessive social media use leading to poor grades. It also can lead to second thoughts about being at an academy when looking at their friends from high school seeming to lead carefree lives of drunken pleasure at State U. Short term thinking leads to long term failure. Just my two cents.

I used the hell out of my iPad all four years at KP. Posting on it now actuall. I use the hell out of it at work too. Books, digital charts, voyage planning, contacting home, sketching projects, and browsing reddit during the painful afternoon classes in samuels. It won’t change your social media use because you have a lap top in your room. If you’re going to have problems it isn’t because you have an iPad, they might manifest via your iPad, but the iPad isn’t the problem.

That whooshing sound? It’s the helicopter blades. I’ve got the blue tube and the big gold ring. If you want an iPad, then use the iPad.

I would hope that we can offer differing opinions on this forum without resorting to personal insults.
No, those are not helicopter blades whooshing. Being an informed parent with independent opinions on your child's education is not equivalent to hovering.
Thanks for your critique of my parenting skills though. Just to be clear, I raised my kids to be respectful to others, including listening attentively to "boring" professors, rather than browsing on the internet during class. If your idea of good manners is different, you are entitled to your opinion. I respectfully disagree.

I don't think someone who isn't a student or alum should be giving detailed advice about what to do or not to do at Kings Point.

Please feel free to disregard my advice and never read or respond to another one of my posts (please).
I don't have to have fallen off a cliff to tell someone it might be a good idea to step back from the edge.
People post on this forum (at least I do) to get different points of view. Everyone should take what they find useful and leave the rest. If it were a forum meant for only current mids and KP alumni, it would be limited to those people. For the time being, it is an open forum and I will continue to give honest answers to try to help people rather than trying to cut others down.
As you grow older and (hopefully) more mature, you may come to realize that sometimes a perspective from a distance can be more helpful than that from up close.

As "just a parent," I have to disagree with this statement. I've learned a lot from this forum and was able to pass the advice to my DS. He used some and disregarded others. The advice helped him pack for indoc and for sea year. As a matter of fact, some of the best advice has been from another parent. The worst...a current midshipman. It's a mixed bag, but for the most part, it's been very helpful.

This is great in theory. But new students can't tell what advice to regard or disregard because they haven't had the experiences. The forum is fine for everyone but not it's distasteful for people who haven't done it to comment so extensively on academics, indoc, etc beyond just what to pack. Because you haven't done it, leave that to the alumni and students.

Gosh. I am so sorry. I will try to remember to ask you next time before I write anything if it is a topic on which I am allowed to have an opinion.
