My son was denied for his astigmatism mainly and I was told from his recruiter what could I do in this instance. He informed me that I could get his medical records from the optometrist stating his astigmatism has improved since his last visit, which was August of last year. So I took him in April for his exam and sent the records off right away. It's now June and no word but it's a "waiting game". My son is 4 years AFJROTC, over top three, and recieved numerous awards..now his astigmatism is keeping him out. My question is how long could it take to overturn? Because I will keep on the recruiter and do what ever it takes for my son to fulfill his dream.

I'm confused as to why you are talking to a recruiter? Is he enlisting or applying to the Academy?

I am guessing the OP’s son is trying to enlist. This forum is for those pursuing commissions via a Service Academy, ROTC or OCS. DoDMERB governs the medical portion of this for those pursuing this path, while MEPS does this for the enlisted side. The standards for both are very similar, but there are variables, especially on the waiver side. They are two separate processes. I am not sure many of us could be of much help regarding this topic. My familiarity with MEPS is limited, but you could be waiting awhile. The recruiter will be your best bet for information at this point. Good luck.

I wasn't sure of where to post this but I thought this was correct. Not many choices when posting and this process is confusing for me also. I've waited for the recruiter who is not informative at all. I just asked the right questions. I'm hoping to get back up with my sons Colonel or Chief from AFJROTC if they can help.

He's enlisting.

Please understand that this forum is dedicated to officer development programs including Service Academies, ROTC and OCS/OTS, not enlisted programs.

Officers go through DoDMERB, whereas enlisted go through MEPS. The two screening systems are different. This forum might not be your best bet for addressing MEPS issues.
