Hi everyone, I was going over the list of important dates posted on USAFA website and noticed that on July 4 there is something called a Morale Call and it says they will only get a few minutes. Does this mean our Basics will get to do a brief phone call? I know they will get their phones for DDO but I’m curious about this Morale Call. Thanks in advance!

It is possible. No one can say for sure if it will happen but it's a good idea to be ready in case it does. Keep your cell with you and answer any calls that come in, even if you don't know the number. Often an upperclassman will let a Doolie use his or her phone for a short call home as a reward for something done well, so you may get a call from a number with any area code or number. This advice is good for any day of their BCT time, not just July 4. In fact, it is good advice for any of their time in the AF.

Sorry but I heard the July 4th call is canceled this year. Their first chance to call home will be Dooley Day Out.

Thanks so much for the quick reply! I’ll be sure to keep my phone handy as always and answer even if it’s from a strange number.

Thanks, yeah just got that same information from my parent group. Oh well, as the saying goes no news is good news.

I am a cadre this year and can confirm that the 4th of July call was cancelled. It was just too soon and caused more bad than good for a lot of basics. Oftentimes basics are given morale calls at some point before doolie day out for doing well as a flight or squadron. While I wouldn't plan on it, there is a decent chance one will occur, especially since the 4th of July one was cancelled. It should also almost for sure be from your basic's own number and would most likely be in the evening.

Last year a kind soul whispered in my ear "always answer your phone during BCT, regardless of the number." It was very sound advice. I received a couple "surprise" calls that came from a random (probably a cadre's) phone number. Those sweet bonus calls were only one or two minutes long, but ahh, they did this momma's heart good. I was told the calls were for a reward.

Hoodlum 15 - thanks for the heads up. DH and I were trying to plan our day around staying together so that we both could participate in the expected call. Our day just become a lot simpler with your update. Wish that info had been widely distributed - I'm sure many other BCT families are eagerly waiting and wondering. Also, thanks for the "most likely in the evening" comment. Again, really helpful for planning purposes. Family lives are so crazy and cell phones mean that odds are everyone won't be together when a call is received (vs the idea of a land line) unless it comes in the evening. And lastly, thank you 2021mom for the advice about answering all calls, even if you don't recognize the number. I get so many robocalls everyday that I no longer answer numbers that I don't know. Guess that will change for the next 6 weeks!

This robocalls are a pain. While anticipating that call from your basic DS/DD, when you pick up calls from unfamiliar numbers, just remember to never answer by saying, "yes"- you'll never know what you may be agreeing or giving permission for the robocaller to proceed with (purchases, credit apps....).

Excuse typo : " this" should have been "those." I cannot edit when using Android app.
