I have been collecting ideas over the summer, and have set aside some quotes I am going to include in letters, in addition to this multiple-choice one that I am sending, with a self-addressed stamped envelope included, to come back to me;
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

1. My roommate's name is _____________________ and he is from ________________________________. He seems to be:
a. Nice.
b. A marble in a drawer full of tacks
c. Possibly the greatest person I have ever met
d. Not human

2. The food here is:
a. Best I have ever eaten! I love it!
b. Tolerable, but not Mom's
c. Possibly not fit for human consumption
d. No one could possibly put flour and spam together and call this food.
e. ____________________

3. My Company is/are:
a. Such nice people, especially on I-Day! Just super!
b. Regular folks - about what was expected
c. Not at all squared away
d. Dirt bags - the likes of which I have never seen
e. ________________________________

4. Who do I miss most from home?
a. My most-saintly Mother, who gave birth to me, raised me, and brought me with tears and love to adulthood.
b. My very awesome Dad, who taught me all the great stuff and made me A MAN
c. My girlfriend - whom I love dearly and am certain we'll be together for all time and eternity.
d. My dog/friends - for reasons I can't put into print

5. The thing I like least about Plebe Summer is: ___________________________________

6. The thing I like MOST about Plebe Summer is: __________________________________

7. Please send __________________________________________ as soon as is possible.

When he was reciting his gouge for I-Day, my DS regularly responded to the question of "Who is the SecDef?" with the words; "Our Honorable Lord & Savior, James N. Mattis".
I do so hope that he slips with that, when questioned by a Detailer. :D

I slipped jokes in with my letters. A good joke is like currency right now. DD told me to turn parental controls off, so I did (to a degree). She told me it she tried to tell the story of 'The Monkey and the Qball'. She found it "really difficult for a girl to tell her first questionable joke to a bunch of guys" She said the joke got a "meh" response but people laughed there arses off at her haulting redfaced delivery.

You might also send off a cool fact-toied or to in your letters. Plebes are called upon randomly to by a detailer to "Tell me something interesting" Good response gets you a nod an a pass. A lame response brings unwanted attention. I sent her a paragraph or two on BB56 USSWashington (our state) and its action in the second battle off Guadalcanal. Also sent off the projected starting backfield for the Mids 2016 campaign, she said she scored on both and mentioned that she gave other tidbits I sent to Mids in her platoon desperate for some material to respond to "tell me something interesting" with.

Articles printed off the net, in each letter. They have access to news papers, but nothing that pulls their heads out of where they are. Phys.Org was great for this; also CSIS.com. I'd print an article, cut the body of print out of it and send it. She probably read 1 in 3 but the ones she read she really liked and it reminded her I was thinking about her.

Please let your son know that the proper response to "Who is the SecDef" is "Who wants to know?" (this applies to all Detailer inquires beginning with the word "Who")

I sent my DD with some fill in the blank letters to encourage details in her correspondence - 1st one written July 1 arrived today :). In the “one thing that happened that I didn’t expect” blank she says “constantly dripping sweat like I have never sweated before.” This from a kid who spends summers in Texas! “Something new she learned” is making hospital corners, and her “detailer is” very loud and has incredible lung capacity. In other letters I put blanks for new vocabulary words, food / roommate/ detailer / schedule info, high / low / weird points of the day, map of her room, please send me ?, etc.

Any ideas on why she asked for a big box of swiffers? What needs that much dusting?

everything needs dusting. throw in some chlorox wipes too. air fresheners/dryer sheets for scent will be appreciated as the days go on. My daughter could not get enough face wipes.

I know it feels like an eternity but it will be over before you know it!

The Navy firmly believes in titivation - of oneself, one’s uniform and one’s living and working spaces.
Back in the day, elsewhere in the Navy, I failed a room inspection. For condensation. On the outside of my windows. On the second deck.

I had to look up Titivate.
Never heard it, and I have been known to do the London Daily Times crossword for kicks.
+100 to Capt MJ

Wow some great Ideas TY! Also my DS said same thing about sweat hahahah He said when they are stuck in a push up position on floor everyone sweat is dripping on floor so then when they go to “square their corners” they slip in it LOL...for my boy to day it is “nasty” gotta be pretty HOT!

Sounds like Plebe Summer! Now for us old guys, can you imagine what it was like when there was no A/C? They clean their rooms daily, it’s why the swiffers. I failed a room inspection once in the USMC when a Gunny stuck his hand down my toilet into the drain and then claimed it was dirty. I laughed and just said, no problem, will take that failure every time. They will fail their first room inspection (its probably this weekend is my guess). It’s how it works and they get better each week. As much as the stuff is appreciated the letters with the most mundane things you could ever think of are the best part. Pictures are always nice. Seriously what you made for dinner and what the dog did that day... they are great letters!

This is a great read. Had to look up a reference or two...I’m learning a lot.

No letter here yet. Can’t wait. But I have enjoyed seeing what others have shared on pages. Also am really happy to see SMILES occasionally on the faces of others plebes (bc my Waldo must be shy) showing up in recent pics. They are doing really cool stuff. His friends back home are jealous [emoji51]

That is the the right attitude. He will go far. :)

You should have seen the head of hair he brought to USAFA -- full mullet and beard ! He was put up to it by a Classmate who got a pool going to show up at their I Day without a haircut. Nothing like showing up with a target on your back.

Our Plebe's letter said he went to church. Claims it's the only place they don't yell at him. Go Navy! Do they or don't they read the mail out loud and or do the detailers inspect the mail? We would like to update our plebe with news on his favorite team but will that give "ammunition" to his "over-sea-ers" ?

Did you see this guy in the 2022 class last week?
