On the DoDMERB form it asks if you have ever used "chemical inhalants." Would that include an albuterol inhaler prescribed for bronchitis?

Chemical inhalants is listed in the section with amphetamines, barbiturates, cocaine, narcotic drugs, marijuana, etc. so we're assuming they're not talking about a regular prescribed inhaler, correct?

That would be my assumption. I think they're referring to things that get huffed. Gun cleaner is such a solvent.... not to give anyone ideas.

I think this means sniffing glue and ilicit activities of that ilk, not prescription inhalers.

This year I changed to MPro7 gun cleaner after using Hoppe's No. 9 since the 60's. The stuff has no odor whatsoever, but cleans just as well
> I thought the smell was part of Hoppe's marketing. Nothing says a nice day at the range like Hoppes No . 9.
I love that smell...although will admit that it was a little bit of an issue with DW before I had a basement and used to clean guns on the kitchen table. :(

Ok - I had to laugh at this, and fully admit I’m stepping off-thread a bit, but the humor is just so military, I feel it is instructive in its own way to readers unfamiliar with the military and our inside jokes. Why I laughed - when I was on USNA staff, one of my collateral duties was O-rep for The Log. Think National Lampoon or Mad written by mids - USNA grads know. One issue, they completely recreated a glossy fashion/culture mag spread, similar to Elle or Esquire, complete with mids posing in designer fragrance ads. They looked exactly like the glossy mag versions. There was “Howitzer,” ideal for Marine aspirants, and of course, “Lady Howitzer.” And “Gun Oil No. 9,” a unisex fragrance. For plebes, there was “Whiteworks.” (You have to smell a 1000+ plebes in those on a hot day.) There was “Bill the Goat” for male varsity athletes, and “Billi” for female. For the totally-locked on mid, there was “Striper.” There were many more. The photos, the spot-on label artwork, the hilarious tongue-in-cheek ad prose, still make me laugh. Both the Supe and Dant called me when their copies were delivered, and could hardly talk for laughing. And people wonder if mids have any fun there...

Great to hear that THE LOG is (or was while you were there) still going strong. I've heard that it has been off and on over the years. THE LOG, and particularly the anonymous Salty Sam, column always had some hard hitting humor. Must've been a tough collaterial duty -- walking that fine line between being a censor and good order and discipline. I'm sure there was a sigh of relief each time the Supe and Dant called laughing--in my day that call could have gone either way from issue to issue.

And people wonder if mids have any fun there...
. A Public Awareness message for all those on the outside , looking in... candidates, parents with Plebes, etc .. Yes, there are some fun times at USNA, even during Plebe Summer. Sometimes the fun is random and probably wouldn't crack a smile in the outside world. Military humor and sense of fun can be warped...but you make do with what you can. During my Plebe Summer, our late evening "back shaft training session" occasionally broke out into the Plebes dancing the "Time Warp" (from the Rocky Horror picture show) to very load stereos.

As ever, Capt MJ is spot on.

The advice that I gave my Plebe last week was to "see the humor in it".
From growing up with me, he has an appreciation of humor that is lost on most civilians.
His appreciation will be first-hand now, and all I'll be able to say is "I'm sorry". :D

Same here ... the humor also includes the ability to quote appropriate (or perhaps inappropriate) movie lines from the classics ... Blazzing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Holy Grail ... but for this thread I guess I will end my post with a quote from Airplane “Looks like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue” ;)

The response probably needs to be time dependent too. Once when asked if I ever did drugs I replied " Not since Timothy Leary got busted". The teenaged Doctor just had a blank stare on his face the rest of the exam. [emoji23]

I still clean them in the kitchen, but I have a reason for this. When it’s my day off and DW comes home from work to find that I haven’t done the laundry or dishes, the smell of gun cleaner tells her that I had better things to do today. It’s been working for 32 years and I see no reason to change it now.
