Please Post something about Plebe Summer that is Positive

They can't beat you, and they can't stop time!
Seriously though, they will be so proud of their accomplishments by parent's weekend. I bet you will hear more positive than negative. They will enjoy the baseball game they get to go to in their summer whites, they will have a blast when they get to go sailing, they will enjoy the damage control station, and they will make friends for life.

I hope so...Yeah damage control station looked really cool on You Tube! TY

The OP should also search back on threads on this topic from the August-September time frame of prior years to see what was discussed. Each plebe might have a different experience with plebe summer and what some found difficult, others might have enjoyed. Discussions about the phone calls during plebe summer also give a perspective on what to expect.

DS and buddy are home 2nd block. I asked them if they remember anything positive about PS, they both replied - Sundays (sleeping in) and donuts. I asked, knowing what they know now (they are Firsties), and what they know from friends attending regular college, would they have applied to USNA and they both replied, yes.

TY for asking...obviously just dropped my DS there and felt really good when he gave his final goodbyes to us...He knew it wasn’t gonna be easy BUT he was ready...I still would be lying if I said I wasn’t counting down the hours to the first letter or phone call [emoji51] but thanks to this forum and Academy Insider on Facebook...I feel 100X better!

Well we heard from our Plebe yesterday and surprisingly she said she is really happy and said she is still having fun! We were so relieved! She literally loves it there, so not everyone is having a miserable experience. I think it helps that many in her company have a great sense of humor and they seem to support each other really well!

I also think it helps that she had read multiple books by women who attended the Naval Academy, had watched probably every video on the internet about Plebe Summer and USNA in general and was thoroughly physically and mentally prepared before she went, so knew what to expect.

Think of it the way every Chief in the Navy thinks of it.
It's basic training for officers to be, so it's sort of like Basic Training Lite™. ;)

My mantra - your experience is the right experience. Some Plebes will have an awesome time. Some will grind it out. There are so many variables - the Plebe, the company, the officers ... Glad your Plebe is off to a great start!

got a letter yesterday. he sounds very upbeat and joking as always. he said everything as he expected but the food- the way they have to eat and drink, and he drew a picture of it. funny.. also their squad leader is hard on them, but he can tell that she only wants the best for them. quote: "we have had to do planks, and leg lifts, and pushups in the hallway with 80 people squeezed in. We had to do side planks once and our forearms would slip from how much sweat was on the ground." please share what your mids say if you can

Hah! I remember my now 2/C saying that one of the hardest parts of doing PT during Plebe Summer was not slipping in his own sweat - he's always been a real sweat pig (as we lovingly call him). A Detailer ordered them to hold a push up and his hand kept slipping in the pool of sweat below. "What's the problem?" the Detailer barked. "Sir, I'm as sweat pig, Sir!"

Detailer had to turn away he was laughing so hard ...

As a former Detailer I can’t tell you how many times I had to cover my laughter with yelling or duck into an empty room. Some of the stuff is just plain funny. Plus Detailers are crazy stupid tired. Your throat hurts, you have no voice, are going on 3-4 hours of sleep a night and always have to be ‘on’. We always had a Detailer with a mop or two in the hallway to clean up the sweat. Just imagine how bad it was before there was A/C in Bancroft.

That’s great to know things are going well. What Company is your DD?

So true! In our day, the firsties rated fans (plebes did not), but they merely circulated the sauna-like air. I cannot tell you how much better it is to have an A/C room to come back to, to sleep in, to shower in, etc. I'm definitely not advocating for the "good old days" in that regard. But when the ONLY moments of A/C the entire summer were those precious few spent in an academic building and the rest of the time the plebes (and detailers) lived in heat, humidity and sweat . . . it was a different world.

And, as tough as PS seems to plebes, only later do they realize (as Hoops pointed out), it's actually harder for the detailers.

I am looking forward to the first phone call this afternoon, if only to set my wife's mind at ease.
Mrs. THParent is thinking he hates it and wants to come home, so the phone call will help. She has made up all of this in her mind, of course.
My guess is that he's digging it, and glad he doesn't have the responsibility (and lack of sleep) of the Detailers.

There is a lot to be said for the simplicity of life when there is someone to tell you how, when, where, and (sometimes) why to do something.
Ah, the ease of summer training. :)

These are not running shoes, they are "Go Fasters"
This is not a block of concrete, it's a "Dragon's Tooth"
Sir!

Yes my daughter said it’s the organization that appeals to her, and that she is getting more sleep than she needs waking up before the banging comes which helps alleviate the shock! She has great roommates that are as focused as she is and good humor and support in the company. The hardest part for her is not laughing at the way they are told to eat and the memorizing. But she ended her letter with “I’m still having fun! :)” we loved that!

Guess what - the AC is OFF in Bancroft for Plebe Summer.
DS says that they are ventilating with outside air only, and they don't plan to cool the place until reform.
