Pete "Maverick" Mitchell mentors a new generation of U.S. Navy fighter pilots. Son of "Goose" said to be one of them. Val Kilmer returning with a possible volleyball scene-Kenny Loggins said to be writing the theme song! Release date: July 12, 2019 (USA)

I would wish for Goose’s daughter...or Kelly McGillis’ character’s daughter.. or Iceman’s daughter. It will be interesting to see how they update the landscape of carrier-based aviation. A lot of changes in 30 years.
It’ll be hard to beat that distinctive trademark theme song. Best movie-length recruiting video ever. I was fortunate enough to go to a premiere showing for the local fighter community in San Diego with DH, and we knew a lot of the guys doing the actual flying. There was a lot of muttered “bulls___” during the movie, but secret grins all around.

I love the Danger Zone played and the carrier takeoff played at Navy games at kickoff with flyover. Miramar is now USMC air base so they will not get the great Pacific scenery in NV. SIL is Osprey pilot out of Miramar. Would like better if they released July 4. Hope it is as good as the first. They could always go to Coronado.

I like my two daughters better. One just finished as Captain USMC and the other is studying to be a Nurse. DS is third engineer on a USNS Ship somewhere in the Pacific. I know that she did serve in the IDF but so does everybody of age in Israel.

I was stationed at NAS North Island when they filmed the TG 1 love scene and other shots near the Bldg I BOQ and I Bar. I think we all found a way to adjust our noon running route to divert near there.

We can all have fun reviewing it this time next year.

Like that they are trying for the original. The Navy will accommodate if it works. SIL will like some air time off.

I have two available Hornet sponsor daughters, cameo-ready.

And, why not the former Navy women’s basketball team captain (first female retired varsity jersey in the rafters there at Alumni Hall), when I was their O-rep, who was the first woman at Top Gun as a student. Becky would kick Mav’s butt. [emoji16] My DH gave her his original set of Navy wings of gold when she commissioned.

If anyone ever wonders about the SA correlation of athletics and team sports as a predictor of success as a military officer, Becky is a great example. She was a beast on the court, and she took that drive and confidence to her warfare specialty.

Though naval aviators such as CAPT Rosemary Mariner and LCDR Tammie Jo Shults were pioneers in naval aviation in the late 70’s and 80’s, it wasn’t until the combat exclusions were lifted in the mid-90’s, that women could pursue the same career paths as men in naval aviation.

Ok, no more historical meanderings. I’m looking forward to TG II or whatever it’s called, and hope that it looks like today’s Navy.

One of my company/classmates was in many scenes of the original TG alongside Cruise and the rest. When they went to film the singing of "You've Lost That Loving Feeling", the cast did not know the song so my friend who was (and is) a skilled vocalist taught them the song.
He originally got involved in the film as the the Navy liasion officer to the movie company

Oooooo I have to tell my brother "pre-strain" about this who's in AFROTC!

My dad said the 1957 John Wayne "The Wings of Eagles" (for rent from Google) was a boon for his friends to go Navy. He chose Army instead. Haha

Am I the only one who didn't think it was stupid the first time?

Paint a T-38 Talon black, put a red star on the rudder, and call it a "Mig 28". Oh come on!
Everything on the radar screens and seen in the air is called a "bogey", and the "sweep" on the radar screen goes in a complete circle. Please!
There are no trophies handed out at NFWS. Never have been.
Of all the times they showed scary "Mig 28s" firing missiles at those Tomcats, did you EVER see the F-14s deploy chaff or flares? Hello!
I simply cannot count the number of times in that movie where Maverick is walking around outside, in uniform, without a cover!

I mean, I did like seeing those Aluminum Clouds being handled on the flight deck, but they even got that wrong. It must have been an editing thing, but there was at least one cat launch sequence in that movie where a yellow shirt clearly gives a "cut power" signal to Maverick, and the next thing you see is Tom Cruise saluting and getting shot off the cat. Yeesh!

Will I see the movie? Sure.

> I've found this in my civilian career as well -- the commitment that it takes to participate in athletics at the college level translates well to future success. When at USNA , I sometimes resented some of the bennie's that the varsity athlete got (no drill, reduced watches, team tables), but in retrospect, realize the demands they faced and many who I thought were coasting or just came to USNA for athletics have turned out some really great careers.

That was a good read. I didn't even notice all of those.
