It's been 24 hours and no one has commented on Navy's decision to allow female sailors to wear dreadlocks, ponytails and buns. The change is aimed at increasing the inclusiveness of the Navy.

I was disappointed in the manner the CNO used to announce the change and question if the changes were necessary. Curious how others felt.

I have mixed feelings on this. Probably much like my current predicament as a high school teacher, rules are hard to enforce in today's environment. When I'm aboard the various bases in my AO, I see both men and women violating uniform regulations. I have no problem with women looking like women, I guess, as long as they can fit into protective gear when required.

I don't know how long this has been in the works, but the MCPON got fired a few days ago. He reportedly was MIA from his job for a while. Not saying this has anything to do with the policy change, but the services's senior enlisted has to have a voice in these matters.

I distinctly remember seeing a photo of one female USNA Plebe at I-Day, getting her cornrows "undone" (for lack of a better term) during in-processing, so somebody needs to tell USNA, I guess.

I also saw one female Plebe-To-Be with her head shaved, before she reported.
I told her I thought she was a Bad A**, and shook her hand. She smiled a great big smile and thanked me.

To be fair, the new rules specifically say these new hairstyles are still a no-go in machinery spaces where things spin, clank, and go "whirrr!"

I hate it. But I'm a Marine.

For what it's worth when I was on ship the Navy was allowed to wear their hair in a ponytail (or down!!) for females and grow beards while at sea for while in between ports. The Marines all hated it.
Sailors with pseudo-folliculitis barbae are authorized a no shave chit while undergoing treatment. Marines can't get a no shave chit. As I wrote above, standards these days are hard to enforce. I've lived, worked, still work out, and shop aboard Marine bases since the 70s. I never thought I'd see the day Marines would be allowed to wear hats or other unauthorized clothing in the gym. I'm going to Barber gym in a couple hours and will see hats and other such things with no senior Marine saying a word.

I liked the post above because the gal I met (noted a few posts before) on I-Day who had shaved her head told me that the reason
she did it was because they (females) already had separate physical requirements (from the males) and since she could choose
for that to be the only difference, she jumped at the chance to reduce the disparity.

That's why to me, she is a Bad A**. I'll bet she wants to graduate as a Marine.
I should have asked!
