DS is renewing his passport this week before heading to NMMI. I know he will need the passport book. Is there any reason to get the card also?

Really nice to carry in your wallet all the time as an extra ID. Gets you into Canada without having to bring your passport which I always worry about losing. Nice as a backup when you are traveling and lose your passport or it gets stolen. It will prove your identity when you go to a US embassy to try to get the replacement process started. Probably more reasons, but that's off the top of my head.

I have had a passport for decades. Never found a need for the card. Besides, I like to get stamps on the book. . .

The card is intended for those who travel a lot between Canada and the US by land/sea (but NOT via air -you still must use a regular passport when transiting by air). It was designed for folks who live in Detroit and commute to Windsor or live in International Falls and commute to Fort Francis. No hurt having one but if you are not a car commuter to Canada you will never use it.

I have both and have never used the card. Nice to have as a backup ID kept at home in case you lose your wallet.

He is going this morning to apply. He decided to go ahead and get the card as well. It is only an additional $30 or $40.

I'm sure the card is helpful when your passpost is lost or stolen. A friend had his passport stolen in England. It was a pain to replace at the embassy with a temporary passport... and then folks would not let him travel to France on a temporary passport. I'm sure it was some administrative screw up somewhere, but having a card in his wallet could have only helped.

Could take a pic of the Passport & store in the cloud if concern is having it saved on the phone..

Just a follow up to this. DS received his passport in the mail 8/9. Processing time seemed quick so if anyone needs to apply now migHt be a good time.
