I just got a call from an admissions officer and she is willing to offer me a letter of assurance (LOA); however, as a reapplicant she stated that I must first pass the CFA! So, the CFA is my top priority at the moment. My DODMERB is complete and now I am just in the waiver process with USMA. I was not granted a spot before due to not receiving a nomination. Hopefully with a year of college courses under my belt, and the growth from senior year to freshman year of college, the nomination will be within reach this year. Is there anything else you guys can think of that will make my file for admission even stronger? Also, I will be doing ROTC at the University of Memphis in the meantime.

I will be doing biweekly check ins with her in order to ensure progress on the CFA.

I'd focus on getting a nomination as I'm sure that's a condition as well and probably the biggest road block.... in addition to the CFA of course.

That’s awesome! Congrats! My RC told me they don’t give LOAs to college students, but you’re now the 2nd person I’ve heard of who’s gotten one
Thanks! Also just to clarify my receiving of the LOA will be contingent on passing the CFA it may be different in other cases and vary by the candidate. But they were really helpful and sent a workout plan

It's all terminology at this point, but it's worth getting the info right (for anyone else stopping by this thread)

You received the Letter of Assurance (LOA) already.
The LOA is a "Conditional Offer of Appointment".
The "condition" (in this case, apparently) is you taking and passing the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA).
If you meet this condition, you are assured of a "Fully Qualified Offer of Appointment".
Once you get that - you're not still not "appointed" yet - you just have the offer (and you may accept or decline that offer)
Let's say that you accept the offer.
You're not "appointed" until you sign all the paperwork, take the Oath of Office and are thereby inducted into the Army on R-Day.

If between the time you accept the offer and when you report for R-Day, you get arrested for DUI, or robbing a liquor store (for example), more than likely your Offer of Appointment will be rescinded (taken away). So don't do that!

The same may be true for any injuries or surgeries that you have before I-Day (depending upon the type of injury or surgery)
The same would be true if you were to get pregnant, or married, etc.

I am surprised that you received an LOA contingent only upon the CFA, and not also a nomination.
Do you already have a nomination?

It’s contingent on the nomination too! I’m sorry I should have elaborated.

My receiving of the LOA is contingent on me first passing my CFA. The actual LOA is contingent on me receiving a nomination and of course being medically qualified.

As a college re-applicant, you could also participate in your College's AROTC program. Nominations in this category are basically unlimited and all it takes is YOUR hard work and dedication. You will not be competing against anyone else for a nomination. If you show up at your ROTC Battalion with a positive attitude, participate in the unit, do well on your PT test and have decent grades, a Nomination will be almost automatic.

Have you not been working out in preparation to take the APFT at ROTC? I doubt that she wants check-ins from you about your workouts leading up to the CFA - What she just wants to see is that you have taken the CFA and passed it! Get 'er done!

ROTC starts in the fall I am a freshman so I haven’t worked out with my unit. And she suggested the check ins not me!

Congratulations, tratliff! That is awesome and you should be proud of your efforts and perseverance. You know what to do!

LOA offered if you pass CFA???? No nomination last year...WHY? Could USMA have found a nomination for you to be in the class this year? If DODMERB is complete what is the waiver process you mention? Lots of questions from your post.

This is what my admissions officer called and told me. The receipt of the LOA is contingent on me passing the CFA. The actual LOA requires me to have a nomination and to be medically qualified. I have already completed my remedials for DODMERB from the last cycle year. So, this year I will be only going through the waiver process I believe unless they ask for anything else. The waiver process being USMA requesting a waiver for me. If there are gaps I'm only repeating to me what was told to me over the phone. I am in the SW admissions area if that helps anything.

Congratulations! Would you mind if I asked you to share your SAT and ACT scores?

Please remember, SAT/ACT scores are just a portion of the WCS - applicants should not assess their own chance for an appointment solely on in the SAT/ACT scores of a single appointee (or, in this case, potential LOA recipient).

Interesting to hear of contingencies on first receiving an LOA. It seems redundant to have the same requirements to be offered an LOA as for an appointment.
My understanding of LOA's has always been this. They are rare, and offered to highly desired candidates at various stages of the application process. Anyone offered one must become 3Q and receive a NOM, and they are guaranteed an appointment to WP. This would include getting any waivers if any were needed.

Shock-n-awe you are correct about LOA. If you receive a LOA you still must pass your CFA, become 3Q and receive a nomination. My DD received a LOA for USMA class of 2022 back in August of last year. She completed all requirements and received her BFE containing her appointment. Unfortunately for her, 7 weeks prior to reporting on R-day this July, she tore her ACL and was unable to report....completely devastating!
She did, however receive a LOA for the class of 2023, which is also contingent upon her being medically cleared, passing a new CFA, and receiving another nomination. She’s working hard at her PT, hitting the gym daily and working hard to keep her dream alive! She’s looking forward to becoming a member of the USMA class of 2023!

@tratliff As a reapplicant, I assume you took the CFA last year. What were your scores like then?

I would like to add I have received an LOA (early-mid september) and JUST received my nomination from my congressman. I am a college student, and the reason for my LOA being offered was because I went from a 27 to a 33 Act score, so that was a huge boost in my opinion. At this point, my file is now complete and my portal shows I have received a nom. From what I've read, this MOST LIKELY (not a 100% guarantee) will mean I should be receiving my appointment sometime soon. This is where my patience will be tested, but I know I can't do anything else at this point. I feel humbled to have found a forum site that is filled with helpful people who are all encouraging, and good luck to all candidates for the class of 23'.
