No ice breaker for you!!!!

The inability of any administration to understand global security is at best misguided and at worse dangerous. Drastically cutting the USCG budget can leave a large hole in any border security plan, I would hope they understand that foreign nationals have access to and know how to operate boats. Scrapping the plans for new Ice Breakers will leave the Arctic region above our continent up for grabs by countries that are forward thinking enough to understand the importance of Ice Breakers to maintain a presence in the Arctic. These countries are ramping up their production while we sit on our hands. I hope the Senate is smart enough, and dare I say brave enough, to push back hard on this.

Well, now we know what the Dem committee members want to tell the media.

This isn't a budget yet, its a DRAFT being discussed in committee.

"A draft of the Homeland Security Appropriations Act percolating out of the House of Representatives proposes to strip $750 million out of the Coast Guard’s 2019 budget, part of a larger effort to sluice $5.2 billion in federal funds to barrier construction along the international boundary with Mexico and hike spending on Immigration and Customs Enforcement programs."

Every budget starts with a DRAFT. If this was the first attempt to look at cutting the USCG budget then it would register as just a blip on the radar, the problem is the blip just seems to be getting bigger every time boarder wall funding comes to the front of the class.

Last I looked, Rep. Hunter is a Republican.

And you think that Hunter won't vote for the icebreaker? At this early stage of the budget, it probably is still fresh from the professional staffers who actually craft it and its before it starts getting amended. Reading Hunter's statement leads me to believe that he wants to horsetrade with the Senate here.

No, I'm assuming from his statements that he is in favor of the funding for both the CG and the new Ice Breakers, I was just saying that I don't believe it's just the Democrats that are skeptical of cutting this funding.

Ice Breakers are cool.
People think that they just plow into the ice (which they do with thin ice), but for the thick stuff, they surf up on top and then the weight of the ship breaks through. Pretty awesome to see.

Don't worry, the Dem's will protect our border...just as they always have!o_O

Not sure what that has to do with Ice Breakers but hey, if they can keep the CG on at least life support then I'm all for it.

“I really was hoping for a new heavy icebreaker in 2019,” said Adm. Karl Schultz, who assumed his role as Commandant in June 2018. “But a 25% cut to our operations and mission support budget is more than I could have ever hoped for.” Schultz went on to comment that one of his main goals as Commandant is to deploy his strategic priority of reducing search and rescue cases by allowing stupid people to perish at sea. “This budget cut is just the thing I’ve been hoping for,” said Schultz. “It will allow us to make some true vertical cuts and actively degrade our offshore detection and response capabilities.”

What exactly do Dems have to do with this?

Building a wall, rounding up and deporting illegals (the work of ICE) was candidate Trump's first and most enduring promise. President Trump in turn is laser focused on proving he is keeping those promises--many of which align perfectly with the majority of House Republicans. So is it any surprise that House Republicans would pursue any tactic/strategy/budgetary maneuver to pay for "the wall" until such time that the Republicans have reliable 60 vote majority in the Senate or Mexico starts cutting checks to the US Treasury?

One cannot seriously think there is ANY scenario in which Mexico,or any other country for that matter will pay for a border wall. Only in Donald world does this happen. Would the U.S . pay for a border wall if Canada demanded it?
Poster Wishful... Implying all who mostly align with the Democratic Party are not concerned with or some how dropped the ball on border security is painting with a pretty wide brush. That would be like me saying ... Republicans have allowed a foreign hostile government to influence our national elections and have chosen to do nothing about it. I don’t believe for one second it’s ALL Republicans, just the one at the top.
At the end of the day most Americans I believe , are middle of the road moderates. Not far left not far right. As a nation we need to put those moderate candidates into office. As a country we need to stop being so focused on the party and vote for the person not the party.

I now relinquish the soapbox.

So, why all of a sudden are the chickens clucking around the barnyard worried about a icebreaker for the CG, when this has been an issue for at least the last ten years, and nothing was done under 8 years of a previous administration? I seem to remember the Dem's thought the northern ice cap was melting and there would be a year round northern route through the arctic. Additionally I would think a more "hostile" foreign threat is 15-20 million foreign nationals here illegally. Maybe our Sheriff is worry more about that issue.

Nonsense! Everyone knows that we had a full fleet of icebreakers until Trump sold them to his pals.
Just like the VA hospitals which were doing just fine until Trump came along as was the economy!

You're right, the issues regarding new Ice Breakers have been discussed for the last ten years, so much so that appropriations were set aside during the last administration that included a Republican Congress to construct the new Ice Breakers, that's not the issue. The issue now is that there are at least drafts that purpose diverting those funds already approved to the boarder wall.

Maybe you could explain further the meaning of the term "hostile foreign threat". I do think that just handing over the Arctic to actual Hostile Foreign Threats would be a larger concern. The numbers you state seem a bit inflated, DHS estimates the number of illegal immigrants in the US at between 10 and 11 million, the lowest number since 2003.

Sure.....so, first why I had "Hostile" in quotes.

Republicans have allowed a foreign hostile government to influence our national elections and have chosen to do nothing about it.

I consider the "10-11 million" undocumented foreign nationals to be a hostile threat to our national elections. I also believe both Republicans and Democrats have been complacent to allow this to happen. Sanctuary city's are now allowing those foreign nationals to vote....and I guess those congressional representatives will feel that those foreign nationals are their constituents who deserve the equal representation of a citizen.

Local governments are allowing non-citizens to vote in LOCAL elections only. These are for elections such as for the school board. Those laws have nothing to do with congressional representation.

But yeah, keep fear mongering about the non-existent problem of voter fraud in this country. This issue has turned into such a dog whistle for the more prejudiced members of our society.

Not really about Ice Breakers. The original poster sarcastically stated he thought Mexico was supposed to pay for a border wall....and then posted an article stating that appropriations for 2019 would strip money out of the CG budget to build a wall. The Article, from the Navy Times, talks about how the US hasn't had a fully operational heavy ice breaker fleet since before 2010. The article loosely suggests that the $750 million stripped from the Draft of the Appropriations could fund an ice breaker since senate republicans have been trying to earmark money for a CG ice breaker. The Article then quotes Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-CA who thinks Trumps request for wall funding might convince Democrats to fund a new Ice Breaker........ “This might come down to lawmakers seeking leverage and there might be a deal that’s already been done on the Senate side.”
