I-day

I-Day Eve

Well, I just took a stroll around DTA at lunchtime. Parents, siblings, G/B/Fs abound, with usually one young person in the party with a slightly strained look around the eyes.

Saw the NAPSters, some prior enlisted and international midshipmen roll in the last few days. Saw the detailers rocking early morning PT yesterday.

Favorite overheard comments:
- Mom: "Everyone has to get a haircut, even if your hair is already short, because they pay the barbers by the haircut, and they expect to be paid for the entire class."
- Plebe-to-be to parent: "Mo-o-o-m, I do NOT want to go into CVS to buy sunscreen because my shaved head might get sunburned tomorrow."
- Plebe-to-be to G/F: "Uh, I don't know whether I can come home for the Homecoming dance in October." G/F: "Well, can't you ask when you check into the dorm tomorrow?"
- Family Elder: "They have women midshipmen? What do they call them?"

Good luck to all. :thumb:

It's hard to believe that it has been a year already. I remember walking through the mall on I Day eve. We were playing a game of spot the plebe-to-be. Funny how they do stand out.

NAVAL ACADEMY ANNOUNCES LIVE STREAMING VIDEO COVERAGE OF THE CLASS OF 2013 OATH OF OFFICE CEREMONY

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Naval Academy website will host live, online streaming video of the Class of 2013 Oath of Office Ceremony Wednesday, July 1 beginning at 6 p.m. from Tecumseh Court on the Academy’s campus. The video broadcast can be viewed from www.usna.edu.

Approximately 1,230 young men and women will take the Oath of Office as the culmination of the Academy’s Induction day when they begin their new lives as “plebes” or midshipmen fourth class (freshmen).

“I-Day” marks the first day of Plebe Summer, which prepares these carefully selected civilians and prior enlisted military service members for the challenges of midshipman life at the Academy. “I-Day” begins when the incoming plebes are issued uniforms, given medical examinations, complete registration, have their hair cut and learn to salute. After taking the Oath of Office that evening, the plebes will say goodbye to their family and friends, and commence the six weeks of Plebe Summer training.

For more information about I-Day, visit http://www.usna.edu/PAO/Idayvpk09/. For more information about the Naval Academy, visit www.usna.edu.

looks like she doesn't understand how strained their relationship is going to be once he shows up tomorrow for his future favorite summer.

looks like she doesn't understand what he is getting into and that there is no asking of questions...this isn't college, it's the Naval Academy and he's being sworn into the MILITARY in a few short hours

And the fun is about to begin....

Mom doesn't have to worry, sunblock is supplied!

It really is a good comedy show. This is especially true if you learn how to blend in to the ugly tiled walls in Bancroft and not get ragged on by Cadre. Then you can just laugh at the nonsense things they say, and the absurdity that is the Laws of the Navy.

Shout out to forum-mates

Just got back from Worden Field. Had my forum name discreetly on my nametag in the Parents Tent while I was slinging the free Proud Parent tote bags, got to meet some faces to go with names here -- nice to meet some folks. Good day on the Yard (for some), countdown to the 1800 Oath ceremony clicking away...exhausted parents crashing everywhere, clutching the Mid Store shopping bags and other stuff.

Interesting, this year, no "Wailing Wall," looks like they kept their parents further away from Alumni Hall's doors and the un-hitching from the plebes.

And yep, I met Popeyesmom, large nametag and all! :shake:

Sorry I missed you MJ. We had a great day. Zanerdude walked in at 6:15 am and was still pretty pumped after the oath. Saw one Mom my heart went out to.........she was bawling in MIdstore. Said Son spent all day yesterday and early this morning saying "I don't want to go!" They talked him into it. Hope he makes it!

Channel 13 talked to Zane as he approached Alumni Hall asking him if he was scared! Don't think I can stay up long enough to see if he made the news.

^^^^
I'm sure he will - on of my roommates was like that and I honestly thought she wasn't going to make it thru the first night in Mother B. When she walked into our room after gear issue she was white as a ghost couldn't talk, and when she finally did she wanted her mom and wanted to leave. 4yrs later, we were still roommates, and we tossed our covers up in the air and she was commissioned into the USMC!!

It was SO good to meet many of the online buddies! We had a great time and enjoyed seeing our son step into his future boldly. His last words to me after the oath......"Relax, mom. I'm here." As I write this I am printing pictures to send him for his 2 x2 cork board. And it was a pleasure meeting you to Capt MJ!!
