I have read up on the flexed arm hang instructions as followed...

► Climb steps, mount box/ platform, or ladder (or may be boosted up to the bar by an assistant) until her chin is above the bar (Figure 7).
► Mount the bar with a pronated grip (back of the hands facing the candidate) with chin parallel to the floor
and above the bar.
► Step off the platform
► Not swing, kick, or bicycle legs during the event
and the jaw line parallel to the ground through-out the event
The test administrator will:
► Start the event at “5” minutes.
► Give the command “GO” to start the event and the stop- watch
►Monitor body position to ensure the chin remains above the bar and he jaw line is parallel to the floor
►Maintain a flexed-arm position with chin above the bar

My question is whether the event will be terminated if I physically place my jaw/chin ON TOP of the bar. Is this an automatic DQ?

You may not touch the bar with your chin. As AROTC-dad says, one pull-up — one! — is worth more than doing a flexed arm hang forever. Do all you can to eek out one pull-up. There are many training techniques (look online) to help you get there. Work at it every single day for the next three months, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the adrenaline helped you get two! (That’s the average among USMA female applicants, by the way.)

If you’re strongly considering West Point as your first choice, I highly recommend that you are able to do at least 2 pull-ups on your CFA and when you report for your r-day. don’t forget to continue working on your score in between that time period as well.

Is the CFA on R Day a full CFA with the basketball throw and everything? I’ve passed already and would prefer to forget the b-ball throw and all the practice that went along with it forever[emoji23]

There is no CFA on r-day but there are pull-ups. and if you can do zero then that looks bad on you.

If you can’t do a pull-up, other than looking bad, what else happens to you? For example, are you put in a remedial group?

Thanks that’s great to hear. I can do pull-ups pretty well (13 on CFA - male). Should I just focus on push-ups sit-ups pull-ups planks running for beast?

Do all of them if you can. I promise you that people will think less of you there if you can’t physically take care of yourself. I am training a Yuk right now who I’ve known for 6 years because she struggles with the APFT. Having attended West Point for a year now and being an Army brat, she has no excuse for her performance. Build the habits now.

GoArmy2022, do you train other cadets as a plebe? or did you mean you train with her?

I have been training for the CFA for the last 9 months. The three areas of opportunities for me was push-ups, basketball throw and pull-ups.
My push-ups went from 20 to 45, basketball throw went from 30 to 48 feet and my pull-ups went from hanging to 3 pull-ups.

I take the CFA with my coach tomorrow and I am prepared. After the CFA, I am focusing on my up body strength and endurance. If I focus on those two key items, I believe R day will go a bit better.

Training her. Doing something like this was my senior service project in high school, so I’m helping her out! I’d like all the platoons with West Point graduates in front of them to have fit PLs.

Train to maximize your score on the CFT prior to admission by working each individual exercise to maximize your performance. Two to three weeks out from your official CFT go to the track and set the whole cycle up with someone competent tracking your times. Work that as often as you can leading up to the CFT. The cumulative effects of the exercises takes it toll so you will not do as well on the timed test as you did on the individual exercises. This is essentially periodization training whose goal is to achieve maximum performance for a particular event without overtraining and seeing diminishing results due to stress on your CNS. You will need to meet the minimums but strive to do your best in all. My DD who is a soccer player has very muscular legs and an average build from the torso up. She could not do a single pull up prior to admittance. She had a very high score in her CFT due to maxing out on push ups, sit ups and the run. Did fairly well on the basketball throw and shuttle run and did the flex arm hang for like 45 seconds. She is a plebe now and had the highest PFT in her squad and one of the higher scores in her Company among females during Beast. I think she can do a few pull ups now after beast but the point is to do your best in everything that relates to your application. "I" believe that West Point more so than any other academy is looking for the most well rounded applicants. I would not worry about others impressions of you on R day as long as you are fit and perform well.. that said there are many females that opt for the flex hang on R day. (caveat is if you did a 45 second arm hang on your admission CFT do not come in and bail at 10 seconds).
