Army ROTC

Hi-
I was hoping someone could shed some light on the process.
My son is a senior in HS and verbally committed to play Lacrosse at VMI.
He would like to try for an Army ROTC scholarship. Deadline for 1st round is OCT. 1..
His gpa is a 3.4
Average ACT 24
Ehh SAT 1130
When I called the recruiter he said apply first round and then keep reapplying.
He just took the ACT again and we are waiting for scores. He is also slated to take SAT again in October.
Should I Wait?? Any information would be greatly appreciated!
 
You only apply for an AROTC scholarship once. You don't reapply the same year.

Who is the recruiter you are referring to? The only reliable Army resource for ROTC is the enrollment officer on a college campus also known as a ROO.
 
So I would say apply for this first board, even though your DS's packet isn't super competitive because you can update scores and other things on the application even after the first board as he retakes the ACT and SAT. And you don't have to completely reapply, your packet will automatically roll over to the second and third boards but you can continue to update.
 
How about EC's and leadership, other than sport/ lacrosse? 2 yrs ago My DS won a 3 yr AROTC scholarship 2nd board that was upgraded to a 4 yr after 3rd board-with a 24 composite ACT. He is now an MSII at Virginia Tech in the Corps of Cadets. He did have a higher GPA at 3.9, but point is it can be done. If you're a little low in one area, make up for it in other areas. They look at the whole candidate. They are not just looking for genius scholars, but are looking for LEADERS. Tell uour son to put the best package together he can and give it a whirl. If he wants to serve he should definitely try. Good luck to him.

He is in the math club and engineering club....also spends time at the local food bank and was JV Captain on his team last year.
His gpa is HS Cum for the last 3 years
 
@Sandraa, your DS needs to show concrete examples of leadership impact to boost the WCS and compensate for good but not great academics. Not enough to be in math club and in engineering club and JV team captain. What did he do to make those organizations better? Best wishes to him.

Unless things have changed, my understanding is that once you submit your application and your file has been reviewed and scored by the scholarship board that the only updates that can be done are revised SAT/ACT scores. So i would insure the application is complete before submitted and not count that anything besides the test scores will update afterwards.
