This is Branch Week at USMA - plenty of Facebook links etc with YouTube videos featuring career officers. Good baseline for aspiring candidates to get a look into the 5 years after academy; your application is only the beginning of a long journey. Academic major choice pales in comparison to branch - learn up on all the options.

Our son had an interview with the commandant of his first choice branch Tuesday. Fingers crossed.

He says that there is not as much angst this year as in year's past due to the change implemented after the branch night incident last year (where a couple of unhappy cadets discharged firearms in the barracks and were separated). All Cows submitted a list of their top five branch choices and received a 1, 2, or 3 rating from the branch commandant of each choice so that they could submit realistic final lists this year. He received a "must select" from the commandants of all three of this top choices, so he is not too worried. He's fine with any of the three. Due to range of interests, he says most cadets end up with their first or second choice, so it's all good.

That manner of 'separation' sounds like a lengthy term in Leavenworth. Never heard of that incident but most cadets should know their odds based on class rank.

Branch Week is like Christmas in September...Army Christmas! (Only less so with celebrating Jesus' birthday and more so with Tanks and Helicopters and Artillery--and tents for those other branches that can manage awesome equipment.)

I haven't referenced this site in almost 4 years. While reminiscing today (BRANCH WEEK HOOAH) and thinking about how far my peers and I have come, I thought I would check out the place I once came to for counsel. I saw this post and felt compelled to create an account in order to dispel this ludicrous statement.
*palm to face* There was no such "discharge" of firearms in the barracks. That information would have been leaked if had happened. I am positive there was a misinterpretation between you and your source; I wish the best for your son and hope he gets his desired branch. Meanwhile, I will be submitting my final preferences following a nice night at the First Class Club.

Take care,

That random Firstie (DEATH BEFORE DISMOUNT)

Thanks for your input, like I said, my 21 would’ve said something. Just a misinterpretation as you said probably.

Good luck in getting your Branch.
Hopefully you are going Infantry.....
HOOAH!
