We spent the weekend at VMI and my ds fell in love, he is currently a junior so he has a little time to add to his resume.

Current stats
Grades- cumulative 91.3(school doesn’t give a gpa)
His only AP credits are in principals of engineering, and a civil engineering class.
He is taking pre-calc and chem junior year and will take calc 1 and physics as a senior but not at AP level
PSAT score was a 1300
No Act score yet

Will have 4 years of JROTC
Co-Organized and ran blood drive
Let. 3 squad leader
Jr. captain of raider team (will most likely be head captain next year)
Various small leadership and volunteer roles as well

Athletics- currently
3 years Raider team
2 years Rugby( the school team is a “club” team so no varsity letters)
PT-
Push up score 75
Curl up 68
Pull ups 13
2 mile run time 13:28

He also works 2 jobs.

He plans to go either AROTC or NROTC MO with a civil engineering major.

Any advice would be welcomed and appreciated

@kChaos5974 - Glad to hear your DS visited VMI and "fell in love". VMI has a good engineering program, so if he feels the 24/7 military life is a good fit and wants to study engineering, he should do well there. As I'm sure you know, out of state is expensive so pursue all scholarships and financial aid in addition to applying for ROTC. He can apply for both AROTC and NROTC-MO. VMI will prepare him well either way.

As for advice, I'm not sure how the cumulative grade compares to gpa, but would just say he should continue taking challenging courses (especially STEM if he wants engineering) and keep up with the physical fitness. He has time, so he should try to improve his PT scores. Increasing pull ups will help a lot and he definitely has time to work on it. Also, he should make sure he is working on correct form for all PT events. And of course, stay out of trouble and make good decisions.

Great advice from dadof2.

Keep doing what he is doing. If he can pull up his grades it won't hurt, but it's possible they are fine, can't say without knowing how that would convert gpa wise.

It is a little harder to get in for out of state than in state because a certain percentage of the Corp must be from in state.

VMI has a great engineering program, it's pretty tough, Mechanical. My son is a CE major and he loves it.
 
a little google shows a 3.7 gpa and 26 act - give or take, strong ACT/SAT seems a good idea if you're looking for a scholarship

you might look at another school a bit further south - we've produced an engineer or two over the years and our incoming President is a USMC 4 star

That said VMI is a fine school and gives the purest of the Corps of Cadets experience

He is also interested in this southern school you speak of, but unfortunately they don’t offer an immersive visitation until after prospective cadets apply fall of senior year. Right now he has nothing to compare VMI to.

Only for those that have already applied, they offer individual visits which include a conversation with admissions and a guided tour. We may plan spring break in Charleston in order to visit.
