Hello all,

I heard that USCGA only accepts ~300 plebes each year. Does it really mean its that hard to get into with the greater selectiveness and not needing a nomination?

SA Selectivity

You can start a BIG argument about which academy is harder to get into

But they are ALL very selective, they are all much harder to get into than a public university (I work at one of those), with each looking for those special students uniquely suited to their service mission and educational culture.

You can measure so many different ways how selective a college is, let's just say that all the service academies are all up there at the top!:thumb:

CGA accepts ZERO plebes a year...however it does accept swabs.

It's always interesting to hear what exchange cadets think of CGA....you can't get "lost in the numbers" like some can at the larger service academies.

Don't forget - they get far fewer applicants than the larger service academies.

I think all SA's accept around 10% of their applicant pool, so total number of applicants doesn't really matter. All are very selective. The only wild card seems to be the fact that no congressional nom is needed for CGA. Some might say that makes it harder, some easier. I don't think it plays a big role either way.

Bottom line, IMHO, if you got in to ANY of the SA's....you are one heck of a great kid. :thumb:

Well said, mnolan.

shellz - Since he mentioned 300/year were accepted, I assumed that he was comparing that to the 1500 or so that are accepted to USNA. And that this made it much more selective than the other SA's. Then again maybe I just read too much into his question.

I don't think you read too much into it....we all interpret the written word differently. That's the downside of emails and the like  Bottom line, for all those who are thinking of applying, there is no "easy" SA, and sometimes a truly qualified candidate gets accepted at one and will get a rejection from the other(s). The whole college acceptance game can boggle the mind.

Here's what you can assume. CGA is the most regimented of the five federal service academies.

Take that to the bank. I've heard it from USMA, USNA, and USAFA exchange cadets (USMMA does not participate in the exchange program because they are on Trimesters.)

I hears somewhere that a nom might be in USCGA future is that true?

HR 2830 which called for a nomination process similar to what USMMA uses, was introduced in the 110th Congress, having passed the House but not the Senate.

It (a similar bill with language to install a nomination process for USCGA appointments) has not been re-introduced in the 111th Congress.

111, huh? Man, this young country of hours is getting old!

:) also keep in mind of that 300 it includes the previous year's CGA Scholars (prep students)... :)

LOL yeah Swabs... :)

People find it very difficult to understand that the USCGA is the mose regimented?!? why is that? it is interesting to hear people's comments when we talk about it.
