USAFA interview

Any advice for the interview portion of the USAFA application?

My DD had hers last Friday and it was very low key. Her interviewer took a few minutes to tell her about himself and them she got to do the same. He asked about the different leadership activities that she had on her app. He then asked her to expand on what her accomplishments were while in those positions and what her responsibilities were. It only took about 30 minutes total.

@Baba, your interview may last 30 minutes. But be ready to go much longer. My DD’s USAFA interview went more than 90 minutes — via Skype. Not saying that shorter is better or longer is better, just that you shouldn’t be surprised one way or another.

My DS emailed the evaluator now listed on the portal . He introduced himself and asked to schedule the interview . Today he got an email response from another ALO saying he will do the interview over the phone. Should an email be sent to the the original ALO listed on the portal to clarify. ( There are three names listed: One is listed as counselor, the second as ALO, and the third as “Evaluator.” The handbook mentioned interviews are via Skype mostly and only via telephone as a last resort. Does this mean this telephone interview is just a formality and he is not considered as competitive as the other candidates?

IMHO, don't read anything into a Skype vs. telephone interview. Speculation and "what ifs" can keep you up at night if you let it -- just focus on those things that your DS has control over and trust the process for the rest.
 
The AF Form 4060 interview is "supposed" to be done via "video conference methods" like SKYPE, ZOOM, FaceTime, etc. If that's not available, to either individual (evaluator or candidate) then a phone interview is acceptable. Don't read anything into the methodology.

As for who to contact, when, etc., that's entirely up to the candidate. When they see the evaluator show up on their portal, IMHO, it's a good time to contact them, introduce themselves and give a brief "who I am" in an e-mail. Then ask about the timeline for the interview. If you have some restrictions (one young man I had was involved in football and wasn't available after school because his practices went into the evening and then his parents insisted he do his homework) let the individual know up front: that young man and I had a weekend SKYPE interview, it worked great!

This isn't supposed to be too challenging or confusing...communication with the ALO/Evaluator is important. It will work!!

And yes, DS already did all that you have mentioned even before I asked the Skype vs telephone question. And then the name of the evaluator changed two days later so he emailed the new one. I wondered about methodology of the interview because seeing an animated face matching the voice (of course along with substantial discussion) may give a better and lasting impression than just voice. Hence the handbook stating telephone use as the last choice. Just my opinion.
