Service Requirement Question

I haven't done a ton of reading on the USMMA, but I understand that the service commitment following graduation is to work for 5 years in a maritime-related field.

Question: Does the USMMA recognize/allow service in the USNA or Coast Guard to meet the referenced "service commitment"?

I read a reserve commitment and required service of 5 years after graduation in XYZ maritime organizations. I guess the only question left would be whether the reserve commitment is impacted by a choice of active duty in military service after graduation. No need to answer that one, I was really just curious.

Yes. Active duty service in any branch qualifies as fulfilling the 5 year service commitment. Still have 8 years total, but the last 3 can be in the reserves. Other service commitment options include NOAA and USPHS. About 25-30% of each graduating class usually opts for active duty. It is interesting to see the changes in career goals. Some Plebes enter USMMA definitely wanting to go active duty and end up sailing on their license and vice versa. Sea year seems to be the determining factor. It is good to be able to try out potential career paths before committing. One great advantage of Kings Point is options.
