I recently found out about SAP and I am very interested in Marion Military Institute. Is it possible to apply for the SAP at MMI at the same time as my West Point application? Or is the program open to only those they accept?

I don't know anything about Marion Military Institute but with respect to the service academy prep schools for West Point and for Navy, you do not have a separate application. They can just decide to give you an appointment to the academy or the prep school based on your qualifications. Hope that helps and best of luck to you!

You can apply for MMI at the same time as your application to West Point. If you don't get accepted to WP but do select as an AOG scholar, you can use your scholarship at MMI. In addition, if you don't get the AOG either you can enter MMI and take the prep courses. MMI is an accredited college, so any credits you earn will transfer to other colleges.

Contact LTC Thomas Bowen at MMI. He's the SAP director and either he or the admissions people will be able to answer any other questions.

What is his rank LTC? I hope you don't mean Lieutenant Colonel. LTC is not the right abbreviation.

Variations for Marine Corps and Air Force use the LtCol format. Military regs also differ from USPS guidelines and newspaper style books. But LTC was drilled into me as “the Army one.”

Capt MJ is of course correct on the abbreviations. It’s like Capt vs CAPT. Very different ranks depending on the way it’s capitalized and service. Marine Capts always love booking BOQ rooms on Navy bases. They always some how end up with very nice senior officer quarters!

Or go to your local community college and do the fitness/extra involvement on your own instead of going all the way to Alabama to get what is basically community college education with a uniform on. The people who went to the prep schools are not inherently of any higher quality than the people who went to community college. It depends on the individual. I knew a systems engineer at Kings Point who went to community college before, and he was much smarter than any of the people from prep school.

Let me know which community college you know of that has 24 plebes at USMA this year.. The curriculum of the SAP program is completely separate from the "Community College" education offered at MMI and is dictated by each Service Academy.

Do what is best for each candidate. If reapplying to a SA, really talk to the BGO and your admissions reps (equivalent for each SA) when reapplying. Find out where you are weak and make an assessment if a prep school, community college or 4 year is best. Money, family situations, and weaknesses in each applicant will drive what is best. If exploring the prep option ensure to fully understand the stats for a non-sponsored prep and what is Plan B if you don’t get into a SA the following year.

If you go to MMI it will prepare you for the miltary aspect of the acadmies. If you didn't take AP chemistry or at least take chemistry your last year of high school ..you will be getting slapped in the face almost everyday in a chemistry class were the teacher expects you to already know the information. Most of the kids are struggling in that class. As well as physics if you have to take that. The only academy graduate in the program is Ltc Bowen. Honestly if you go to a regular school the teachers will be more understanding and your grades will be alot more competitive.
PS:You have pointless PT every TWF so staying up late to study or finish work will only exhaust you the next day..and this isn't like the acadmies where teachers understand your tired, at MMI you will get punished and they'll probably write about you being tired on your evaluations

I attended MMI on a Falcon Foundation Scholarship, loved it and subsequently graduated from USAFA. I've heard that MMI has gotten even better since then.
I wanted to let you know that there are a couple other paths that could also be taken to attend USAFA/Prep School. You could enlist in the AF Reserves or Air National Guard or enlist in the Active Duty AF and apply under the LEAD Program (would recommend that you attend a community college if you enlist in the AFR/ANG). The AF requirement is that you have completed basic training in order to apply. There are some other requirements that can be waived. Each path has its pluses and minuses. If you enlist, your chance of acceptance will depend on the support you get/earn from your chain of command as well as your performance in the AF.
While at MMI I had many classmates who were in the Army Reserves. You may be able to attend MMI and join the AF Reserves - it is worth checking into.

I found this on another post about MMI in this forum. I would go strait to the source with all your questions. "Please give me a call - I work for MMI and we can help... My name is Susanna Barnes - 334-683-2364 or email me at sbarnes@marionmilitary.edu"

My DD is at MMI, we come from a small rural area and she attended a public high school. She had taken all the AP classes she could and classes through a CC, for a kid that had never struggled chem and calculus kicked her butt, she worked hard and came out better in the end, her ACT score raised, the PT is preparing her for what is to come and made her stronger, and she is way more prepared if she does get into the academy. I have watched her in a few short months grow tremendously.

Proudteachermom- My DS is at MMI, too! He's embraced the MMI culture so much that his plan B is a second year at MMI. He does have a principle nomination to 1 SA and an alternate nom to another SA, but you never know what can happen. My DS had different weaknesses in this app than your DD and MMI was great about identifying and improving those weaknesses.
Madeline B- My DS is SAP self sponsored, meaning he did not receive a sponsored scholarship from any of the academies. MMI gave him a generous scholarship, which was a deciding factor for their program. His second choice was Greystone, a more normal college experience was appealing but they did not offer as generous of a scholarship. So happy he choose MMI, wearing a uniform everyday and living in a military environment has solidified his desire to attend a SA. If you have any questions, feel free to PM and I'll answer to the best of my knowledge.

My DD was set to go to the Citadel, they gave her a generous scholarship but we were still left with more than we could handle out of pocket. She had received information from MMI and they offered her a great scholarship along with them being very affordable, along with their success rate were the deciding factors. It has been so good for her, you can tell she has found her "tribe" so to speak and that this is her calling. She has done really well with her classes and the growth she has made is crazy, we dropped her off a little girl and by parents weekend she was a leader. She has received 3 nominations, however none of ours rank their nominations so now it is the waiting game. She did tell me at Christmas that she has decided if she doesn't get in she is enlisting and finishing her degree and going green to gold.
