Does anyone know the exact date for Flag day?

I believe it is 25 July but not sure.

The date of the Mystic Flag Ceremony for the Class of 2013 has not been officially announced, however it is widely believed that it will be held on Sat 7/25.

What is the Mystic Flag Day? That is the day we will be picking up our Aimster and were planning on visiting Mystic Seaport that day.

Swab Summer Traditions - Mystic Flag Ceremony

(note - this link is for LAST year, Class of 2012)

From the USCGA Parent's Association Web Site:

What is the Mystic Flag Ceremony?

During the fourth week (approximately) of Swab Summer the Companies at the Academy, and not on Eagle, travel to nearby Mystic Seaport, a national maritime museum in Mystic, CT. for presentation of the class flag to the Swabs. Parents and friends are encouraged to attend this event as it is the 1st time an official opportunity exists to meet your favorite swabs since the date of Reporting-In! You may observe the Ceremony, which is quite impressive, and visit with your cadet for several hours afterwards. Admission to Mystic Seaport is free for cadet families that day. Call the Cadet Watch Office ((860) 444-8294) to confirm the schedule. More information is usually forthcoming on the 4th class email list as things firm up.

Many parents ask if they should attend the 'Flag Ceremony' at Mystic if their cadet is away on the Eagle. It has been suggested that it might not be as meaningful without your cadet present. It's true; without your cadet there, it is very nice to see, sweet too, but just not very exciting without your very own cadet to cheer on!

It is actually Flag Ceremony day as some have mentioned. The swabs receive their class flag but it is more than that. It is the first opportunity for parents to see their swabs after three-four weeks of training.

The swabs are bussed in to the facility parking lot, then they march in to the seaport. After a bit they are released and get to spend time with their parents.

They are expected to go into the facility's planetarium for a show, which is very convenient for a quick nap.

After that they hold the actual flag ceremony, then the swabs march back to the busses which return them to the Academy. After room inspections etc they are given a 3-4 hour liberty which they can spend with their parents or take the libo van to local shopping centers, etc.

Usually the three companies heading for Eagle don't participate in this, but last year they did. Overall it's a great chance to see the changes in your swab and gives them a break from a tough summer.

This is a short ceremony where the swab companies receive their respective company flags. Sometimes not every company is there as some MIGHT be enroute to Eagle (or might not.....semper gumby...you never know!)

From a parent point of view, it is usually the first opportunity to see/meet their swab since R-day. There is a short amount of free time at Mystic. Assuming everything works well, swabs MIGHT then get the afternoon off. They are also usually given access to cell phones and can call home.

Some parents go to this ceremony, but not a majority. You see a lot of "adopt-a-swab" activities that day. Every parent there seems to insure that cell phone calls home are made, every swab is taken to the mall-Walmart-out to lunch, etc...

It's not an event you need to feel like you MUST attend. I think for me, it was overshaddowed by the fact that we anticipated doing something wrong and getting yelled at. It was nice to get our class flag though. Their class president will keep it in his/her room.

Nice time, but not a must.

We would love to go, but can't. Saving vacation time and dollars for parent's weekend. We are, however, hoping that he finds a phone to call home if they are allowed. It would be nice to hear his voice.

There are ALWAYS people there willing to let a swab use a phone to call home. Sometimes parents bring extras. Make sure he asks someone....don't let him not call home because he is too shy/embarrassed to borrow a phone. Thats why parents sometimes bring extra phones.

I will make sure to include your advice in my next letter. He probably would not have the nerve to ask to use someone else's phone though. I am encourage by all of the postings, and the conversations we had on R-Day, that a local parent might just extend the offer to him. Everyone has been so kind and offers of including him at Mystic have already been extended. Great community! We feel very lucky to be a part of such a nice bunch of kids and parents

We had alerted a couple of parents we knew would be there that we wouldn't, and if they saw our daughter to have her call us. They ALL looked for her that day, and she ended up having half a dozen parents offer her a phone! Thats the first time we truly realized how the cadet parents really look after other cadets at CGA. That is something you don't find at most other college programs!

So true. They become very good friends as they stalk each others kids.

LOL..... OHHH yeah... stalkers we are.. LOL:shake:

I sent 16 letters off last week to new Cadets/ Swabs / Mids / plebes.. ... I just simply typed a note and printed it... mostly members here and friends on Facebook...You know, the kids we all have been following for a year..

.... Mr CGA (Shellz son & the only CGA Swab addy I have) got a hand written note because I had already closed out MS Word.. besides I needed to butter him up.. as my DD will be there in 2 weeks, maybe he will get a chance to see/meet her
