Am I correct in assuming that in order to be 3Q all portions of the application need to be complete? My son's English teacher is dragging his feet on the SOE and I'm wondering if that is holding up 3Q.

I don't think the English teacher doesn't want to do it; I think he's just one of those people who procrastinate A LOT. He did one for USAFA and LITERALLY did it on the last day possible after multiple emails and conversations asking him to do it. He emailed me after he completed it saying how much he thinks of DS etc so I really think he's just an under the wire type of guy...aka really annoying to people like me and my son who want things done right and done now :D

Yes - that is my understanding. Receipt of all of the candidate deliverables (which includes SOEs) is a formal stage gate and needs to be completed before the formal review can take place to determine if a candidate meets the 3Q standards.

That's what I figured as it makes sense. Thanks.

That was DS for PE SOE! Understand the frustration!

So annoying! It still isn't done. DS resent the email from the portal AGAIN and I emailed him and basically begged him to PLEASE do it before winter break. We'll see...

My DS plebe was in the similar situation. Finally about the same time last year I had to make the call to the principal and it got done almost instantly. Good luck.

If your DS has a guidance counselor at his school I would ask the counselor to reach out to the English teacher as well. Sounds like the teacher needs to be pushed a little so maybe a little shaming from an administrator would help.

Well, considering I had to push quite a bit on his counselor to get his transcripts sent, not sure how much she can help :( But I think I might try. Still isn't done and I emailed again and DS has talked to him again.

I wouldn't normally advise this, but if you have time you might want to visit the teacher and/or guidance counselor face-to-face yourself. Sometimes a parents face will move heaven and earth. Maybe someone will wake up., I would normally say to let the kid do it but it sounds like he has and failed, I'm sure through no fault of his own. Go shake 'em up a bit! Or not.

Agree, the COC is very important at WP, but you gotta get there! As kinnem points out, in almost every instance, the Academy only wants to deal with the Cadet candidate, but on a high school level, I think it is OK to still be the parent and advocate on your CC's behalf. Too much at stake to not do so. There will come a time, very soon, when you are out of the loop, and your potential Cadet will handle everything on their own. It came faster than I would have thought, but turns out it started immediately after the 90 second goodbye.......and if you don't get satisfaction from the GC, go to the boss.

Quick add..............I would discuss with DS to ensure that they are in the loop and good with what you might do. If you are going to see the GC, they need to know, and be good with it.

Well, as it stands now, DS is not okay with me doing anything. We found out yesterday that he did not secure a nomination from our representative. While our senators still haven't given theirs out, the fact is that chances were best from the rep. The rep said this year was extremely competitive for USMA and offered him a nomination to USMMA, which DS is turning down today. So DS is obviously still going to complete his application, but he has shifted his focus to ROTC or MJC. He figures the English teacher now has lots of time to get it done because he can't be appointed anyway. Disappointing for sure but it's reality.

We had a similar situation with teachers doing rec letters for plan B, C, D. Fortunately, DS was all over getting the SA applications complete and was able to get the teachers to do the SA recommendations the first week of school and had everything complete by late August. However, going back to same teacher once and another teacher for recommendations for Common App has taken months. Being early was great for SA's but makes a parent nervous about back-up plans. Neither DS or teachers seem as focused on plan B, etc.

Sorry to hear about the nomination but don’t give up hope. Maybe he had a better interview with the senators and that will surprise you! Any hope for a presidential or Vice President nom? Also many kids self prep or go to plan B school on rotc and reapply. That also gives another source for nomination.
My DD self prepped at NWP and it was a great experience, she is now at plebe at usma, says they love reapplicants!
And you don’t need a nom to get into the prep school at usma, you just have to complete the application!
Don’t lose hope, there are lots of options besides the direct route!

did your DS "resend" the SOE request email from his USMA portal to his English teacher? if not I would suggest he does because it should trigger a fresh email from USMA to the English teacher to fill out the SOE form. My DS has had to do that with more than one SOE

Yes, three times now! I told him today to talk to him AGAIN.

I’ve been reading this thread for a while and I’ve decided to chip in. I had this same issue, though maybe not to the same degree of frustration, with my PE teacher SOE. So I set up an in-person meeting with her in her office after school, briefly explained again what I needed her to do, and resent the SOE link. She received it and completed it while I sat nearby. When she finished, I checked my portal to make sure everything went through. If you are having this much trouble with a teacher, make the extra effort to take control of the situation. It’s easy to ignore emails or forget a conversation. Tell your DS to try doing what I did if he still has no success. Good luck!
