I understand LOA requires an alternate nomination, not principal to get a potential appointment (provided other conditions were met). If same thing is true for LOE as well or it requires a principal nom?

An LOA requires a nomination to become an offer of appointment (plus whatever other condition must still be fulfilled, as noted in the LOA). But it doesn’t matter if you’re the principal nominee or one of 10 on a competitive slate. (As for an “alternate nomination,” I believe that’s a mythical entity.)

An LOE is nothing like an LOA. While an LOA is a conditional offer of appointment, an LOE is merely encouragement to complete your application and submit it.

You do not have to be the principal nom to get an appointment, regardlesss of your situation. LOA, LOE, No LOA, no LOE.............What you need is a nom, period. From whatever source you are fortunate enough to acquire one. Apply to any that are available to you. BOTH Senators, your Congressman.......no stone unturned. LOAs are rare, which means that the lions share of applicants did not receive them, yet are getting ready for Army / Navy right now. Don't get hung up on them. Good luck!

Did you mean to do that, or was it just coincidence?

LOE is just encouragement from USMA to continue with the application process. It has no relationship to an LOA. An LOA AND any kind of NOM gets you an offer of appointment.

Not totally true, @time2. With an LOA and a nomination, you may still have a condition that must be addressed to the SA’s satisfaction. For example, my DD had LOAs and nominations to two SAs. But for one SA, she needed to clarify a quasi-medical issue. For the other SA, she needed to clarify a CFA score. Only after doing so did she get the offers of appointment.

I was speaking in general since many who participate here are new to the process and sometimes it is made overly complex when every possible nuance gets raised. IF the LOA comes with 'conditions', you need to satisfy those to get your appointment.

@time2, you’re right to simplify when possible.

But an LOA, by definition, comes with conditions. That condition can be anything from a nomination to a DODMERB clearance to a successful CFA to anything in between. These are not nuances.

If the LOA was not conditional, it would be called an offer of appointment.

The OP was asking about LOE vs LOA, that was mostly what my comments related to.

Indeed. I should have been more clear.............You still have to be 3Q. Thanks for setting it straight!

I liked your sense of humor :)
Thanks for information. It's always good to raise your hand and ask what we newbies may not know.
Cheers ...
I was really confused!! Never even saw that your profile pic was a lion! I am not that witty, sorry!! Coincidence. As has been made clear, my info needed tweaking........I was merely trying to point out that many cadets (the lions sha...........never mind that) get in despite not getting an LOA or an LOE..........they have to secure a nom, and be 3'qed. And be offered admission!!
