BEAT NAVY!!!

The Cadets played a tough game and deserved to win.

And that’s how you sink a squid!

Inter-service rivalry is good, and gladly accept this kind of comment from a veteran of any branch (and will be quick to retort with my own extensive inventory). However, one of my pet peeves is hearing it from those that haven't served. OP's profile indicates that he's just a candidate this year, so I would suggest holding the trash talk until you have earned the right.

Amen to that, @Old Navy BGO. You definitely need to earn your right to talk trash, because it helps you appreciate the brother(sister)hood that truly exists.

At yesterday’s game, we were next to a group of very vocal, very animated, very vociferous West Point fans. They weren’t necessarily obnoxious, just loudly passionate. And then we saw that each one was wearing a black USMA jacket indicating their graduation year. Several had lived through the 14-game losing streak. They were celebrating their team, not denigrating the opponent. And again, they had earned the right.

I don’t necessarily see it this way, but I respect your opinion. It’s been my dream to attend West Point for a very long time and even though I’ve been watching the Army/Navy Game for a relatively short while now, I’m still a big fan of Army football and have grown an “inter-service” hatred towards the Naval Academy. I would still encourage you to resort to your own “extensive inventory” because I’m sure you have one and I know that with mines being very amateur, you would definitely embarrass me. With my Nom, 3Q letter, and LOA I’m sure I’ll be appointed to my dream school next year. Maybe we can stay in touch so we can send blows at each other when my inventory matures a little more.

Hatred... wow. It’s a friendly rivalry. It’s a game. Heck, where I live, if one of the other SA basketball, soccer, baseball teams comes through town... I am their biggest fan. Sure there is a lot of intensity on the field of that rivalry, as with any SA game (this one just happens to be seen by millions), but put it in perspective. I do think some maturity will help with that perspective... best of luck on your journey to that 3Q, LOA, Nom.

I mentioned in a previous reply that I’ll be receiving my appointment to the Military Academy, or my dream school, when the time comes. With my brother having graduated Parris Island just yesterday and my sister doing AFROTC, I’m sure it’ll take no time for us to develop a literal brother/sister hood rivalry (we already have one brewing now). I can’t wait! I’m already considering buying them Army and USMA gear for Christmas when I’m officially a cadet.

I know they weren’t the only ones with this behavior. I can guarantee that my behavior at the game matched theirs. It was a great environment.

I root for the other SAs, except when they play Navy, and hatred never comes into play, either for the sports or general inter-service feeling. Once you wear the uniform, you figure out the boundaries of the service family inside jokes and friendly kidding around.
I can call NavyHoops a jarhead, as can any of the Army-affiliated posters here, and she can call me a squid, or other family nicknames, but it’s faintly annoying when “non-family” members do it.

For the second year in a row I watched the game with USMA grads. One is actually a former basketball player. We never played against each other as I have a decade on her, but I saw her play many times (dang good player). We all had a blast giving each other a hard time. But, there was no hatred. Part of it is you aren’t in the rivalry yet. You are seeing it from the outside. And that is fine. You aren’t there yet.

And I really do wish you luck on this journey, but calm down with the whole I will line about the LOA, nom, 3Q thing. It’s a marathon. Work hard for it. Lines like this don’t come off as humble.

Sorry. Didn’t mean to come off as arrogant, or self-centered, but it was was the only was I thought I could show where I was in the process with the least amount of works and explanation. I see that I’ve caught a little flak for using the word “hatred.” I definitely could’ve used used something less aggressive.

Another thing there yankee, not even your newly made Marine brother has yet earned the right to call anyone squid.

You sound like a ninth grader.

I like the trash talk. It brings me humor.
People aren't Trash Talking you, they're actually being quite nice to you and trying to give you some kindly advice.

I’m glad I made this post. Lots of helpful insight on the do’s and dont’s that I would’ve never even thought of. I definitely see where you guess are coming from. It’s like beating up on your siblings but being protective of them from outsiders. And right now I’m an outsider. Not only can I not wait to join the Long Gray Line, but I can’t wait to be amongst the brother(sister)hood all military service members and veterans are apart of. Sorry if I came off as arrogant again, someone who’ll be that “that guy” at USMA, and/or even an annoying snot. Enjoy that rest of your day everyone and happy holidays.

OP, considering the members giving you wise advice here have a combined military experience exceeding a century with ranks up to at least O-6, and at least two admission liaison officers, I am glad you are open to rethinking your attitude.

Good luck to you.

+1 to Hoops. Just got back here to the midwest a few hours ago from the weekend in Philadelphia. Except for the game (from our perspective), it was a great time. Saturday evening at the bar, sat with WP folks I've never met all evening buying each other drinks and sharing jabs, history, laughter and great camaraderie. We did have a blast with hugs, shakes and best wishes all around as the evening ended.
Where else can you find this? I've never felt more joy in a loss to an adversary than the time I spent with these new found friends from across the aisle.

I'm a west point grad with a son at annapolis...great time as always at the game, catching up with classmates, parents of mids, etc...great communities on both sides. That said - and I was a corps squad athlete at the academy so understand the competitive nature of any Army v Navy game - anyone who was there notice the cadet players who ran into the end zone at the end of game and mocked the mids in stands? Maybe overreacting, but as a USMA grad, I found it lacking class and disappointing...just curious if anyone else picked up on that, and what reactions of others was.
