If I have been deemed academically qualified, nominated and not accepted to USMA do I have a chance to be offered prep school? Thank you for any information you can offer.

Strong candidates with weak academics go to Prep and Strong candidates overall but did not get Appointment can be invited for Foundation Scholarship. Either way you spend 1 year with guaranteed Appointment unless you screw up.

USMAPS is typically reserved for candidates who are academically unqualified but otherwise have stellar credentials.

Prep School tends to be one of three groups, enlisted soldiers, recruited athletes, and under-represented candidates who need help academically. If you are a white male from an affluent area don't count on a prep school appointment. Why? Because the typical USMA candidate is a white male from an affluent area, so they are not under-represented at the academy. Now, the Association of Graduates (AOG) scholarship tends to go to highly qualified candidates who missed an appointment due to lack of an available slot for nomination. The AOG scholarship will often go to candidates from very competitive districts who just missed the cut. If you complete the AOG scholarship program, you are virtually guaranteed an appointment the next year.

Does a candidate generally request consideration for prep or is it offered? Who would the request be made to? Thanks in advance for your input.

Hey, I am currently a plebe at USMA. Out of high school, I received direct appointments to everywhere but USMA. My FFR/RC told me to try again next year, but I asked my RC about prep school and he said he would look into it. I probably annoyed him, but I also showed him my persistence. I went to a prep school (not USMAPS) and now I am a happy plebe who doesn't have MLK weekend as a nonchargeable pass anymore (long story - the Corps of Cadets made a mess at dinner). So, I think it's okay if you ask about it.

You can't really request it or apply to Prep, but you can and should let your ALO/ BGO/ MOC interviewing panel know that you would gladly accept a spot at P school if offered! But you should mean it if you say it.

Don't forget that you are also a free agent. You can attend a civil prep course at your own expense and reapply next year if you did not get an appointment. Your persistence will not go unnoticed. Northwestern Preparatory School in CA is a non-military option that is only one semester and approved by USMA. Check it out!

I second this. I went to NWP last fall as a free agent (White, from the affluent neighborhood), busted my behind and got into USMA. If anyone has any questions about it feel free to pm me about it.
