SF or Rangers out of USMA

Hello everyone,

Although I am a long way out from becoming an active duty officer in the Army (5 years), I have recently been looking at possible paths I can take after graduation of USMA. I am currently interested in branching Infantry and then trying out for SF (green berets) or the 75th Ranger Regiment. I realize both of these routes are difficult, but I like a challenge, so these two options have stood out to me.

The main reason I am writing this is because I was doing some research on both of these options, and I came across a concern regarding the 75th RR. It seems as if it is quite nearly impossible to get into the 75th RR as a commissioned officer due to the high number of Infantry Officers in the Army that are gunning for such a small number of officer spots in the 75th RR. So, considering this, I looked more into Army SF, and this route seems more clear cut. I read that there is a higher chance of getting to try out for SFAS and SFQC as a commissioned officer than there is for trying out for RASP 2 as a commissioned officer.

So, my question is: out of USMA, supposing I branch Infantry, is it easier to get a spot as an Army SF Officer, or is it easier to get a spot as a 75th Ranger Regiment Officer? Thanks for the help.

It is much more difficult to win an appointment to attend WP than Rangers. I will suggest focus on getting that appointment first.

Push Hard, Press Forward
Thanks for the reply, but I already have an appointment and have accepted it! I am making sure not to focus too much on careers after WP becaue I know I must prioritize getting through WP first. However, it is fun to think about possible careers I could have after graduation.

@NavyXC939, I will second @tug_boat. Though you have an appointment — congratulations — you are a very long way from having to worry about this. To paraphrase a wise SAF regular, you’re on a road trip from NY to LA, and are currently in Newark. Focus on what’s in front of you: making it to R-Day in one piece, surviving Beast, excelling during plebe year.

Soon enough, you’ll be surrounded by very knowledgeable active-duty personnel, both officers and enlisted — who’ll be able to provide the latest scoop on fulfilling your dream of SF or 75th.

Yes, it’s wonderful to dream. Your passion and drive are clear. But channel that energy for now, because so many things can and will change — your intentions, the Army's needs — between now and then that whatever you learn now may very well be no longer true in a few years.

Thank you for the thoughtful reply. It definitely does seem more practical to wait until I am surrounded by people who know all about commissioning options. I'll keep preparing for the challenge of my plebe year, and as fun as it is to learn about career options after graduation, I will wait because, as you stated, many things can change from now until I graduate. Thanks again, and GO ARMY!

First things first there hard charger!

Seems to me you need to get the top notch grades and pt for a few years

5 years until (fingers crossed) commissioning, but keep in mind you're more like 7-8 years away from even being eligible to, not even try out, but to be selected by the board. You must be 1LT(P) to be eligible to submit a packet for SFAS or any of the other ARSOF branches. If you are selected by the board, you are awarded a slot for selection. I can't say much for the 75th but I know you have to pass RFT and you'll probably need a tab to be seriously considered.

See some of the replies at http://www.socnet.com/forumdisplay.php?f=4

instead of researching alone for a few weeks or months, talk to those who actually were in your dream path.

Officers must pass Ranger School in order to join the 75th as an officer.

Many SF officers have the Ranger tab.

Try 82nd Airborne for a few years. Then Rangers. Then SF (and decide what language you want to learn).

Years ago, quite a few SEAL officers quit because they want DA and not being advisors in South America or Africa....
