Relocating USMAPS to West Point

Why they don't do the same thing with NAPS and NAVSTA Annapolis is beyond me.

Granted, NETC is a more appropriate venue for NAPS than an Army base in NJ is for USMAPS, but you still wonder sometimes...

not sure what you mean by this but Fort Monmouth (2 hrs from West Point) is being closed due to BRAC, hence the necessity to move USMAPS.
This has been in the works for a couple of years now.

Maybe a sports nut can corroborate (or someone familiar with AFA since they do it), but my understanding is that the NCAA looks unfavorably on colocated prep programs with the Div 1 program which they serve. A lot of hoops to jump through.

Simply that NAPS is located on a base (NETC Newport RI) that is specifically tasked with various training responsibilities, among them the Naval War College and Surface Warfare Officer School (or whatever it's called these days), among many others, so it fits in with the general purpose of the facility it is located in. It's not located in the middle of NOB Norfolk, which would make little sense. As such, the comparison of NAPS to USMAPS with regard to location isn't entirely equivalent.

Yup: Newport is a training base. Naval War College, Naval Justice School, OTC, Senior Enlisted Academy, SWO School, Command Leadership School, NAPS and the last time I went around the circle and was there I think I saw something about Cooks School?? Some underwater New London stuff was moved there a couple of years ago so it is still viable as a research base also. Easy to see why they still keep NAPS there. Napsters can easily visit Bowens Wharf, Black Pearl & the Smokehouse on Americas Cup and/or wander up and down Thames Street.

I think it makes all the sense in the world but in the case of NAPS, I don't think there is enough room at the Naval Academy, West Point has like 18,000 acres so plenty of room.

That's certainly true, too.

Of course, we could just annex that worthless college next door....

I think they did that already - didn't USNA buy a lot of land from St Johns?

Then what would happen to the Annual Croquet game?

I was thinking Quantico would be a great place for NAPS but that might turn USNA into USMCA :shake: :shake:

Now I have to 'fess up. One of mine nearly became a Johnnie. We went for a visit a few years back and I think I remember them saying they had sold some land to the Academy. Can't recall for what though.

My current Cow actually seriously considered St. Johns. This is a kid who has a tremendous love of reading... We did a visit to both USNA and "that other" campus on the same trip. How's that for a diverse college list? :shake:

There is actually a lot of heartburn over how to handle the USMAPS cadets being co-located with the USMA cadets. For instance, the USMAPS cadets currenlty enjoy freedoms not offered their brethren -- such as cars, weekends off, etc... Be interesting to see how it shakes out.
