actually a ranger qualified engineer - er allegedly not sure there is a statute of limitations on 'Gross Poor Judgement' and I'd hate to have an alumni walk 120 ...

but note
the proper airborne position
the alternating directions of the mattresses
the highly trained classmates as safety observers

Several years ago I was on the roof cleaning my gutters. Somehow the ladder slipped and I fell from about 10 feet. I tried a parachute landing fall hoping to lessen the impact. I never attended jump school but saw the PLF on TV or something. I landed on my feet and rolled to my left. Right into the shrubs that had lost leaves and were very prickly. My daughter was home from college and came running out thinking I was hurt. She called 911 and they took me to the local ER. Chip fracture left lateral malleolus and the worst injury was the abrasions and puncture wounds from the bushes. I never again went aloft without somebody knowing I was there.

in High School I used to jump into the ground floor gym pole vault pits from the upper-story wrestling gym. We made it more exciting by standing on the guard rail (to add an additional 42") before we jumped. Man, that was a blast. :)

Some where there is a pic of a VMI Keydet jumping from their 4th deck or whatever they call it into a huge pile of mattresses. I mean it looked like most of the mattresses in the battalion(?) were in use

What I want to know is

1. how did Keydets pull that off before the administration put a screaming halt to it
2. how did the entire corps avoid mass tours once it was over

Going to make my myself sound stupid. Got on the roof of my house. While I used a ladder to get up, I could figure out how to get down. First my wife wanted me to jump on the roof of the car and when I said that would crush the roof, she wanted to put a mattress on the car. I called my father in law who helped me get down. I dont know how to put this into words. My problem occurred because the top of the ladder was on the edge of the roof so I couldnt figure how to climb on the ladder without falling off. What my father in law did was to put the ladder so the top of the ladder was now 1-2 feet above the roof so that I could climb on. We were going to call the FD but i was too embarrased and didnt want the neigbors to see the FD trying to save me. I am embarrased because it was a stupid mistake. It was just how the ladder was leaning against the roof.

Humey,

Since you were so brave to share your experience, well, I think I've got you beat.

Wearing just boxers early in the morning I open the back door to throw something in our recycle bin, of course the door closes behind me and it's locked. I figure that I'll do what I've done before when I was dumb enough not to make sure the door was unlocked. I go find a ladder, of course my regular ladder is at my shop so all that was available was a step ladder, so I head up on it to reach our back porch roof so I can go in through our bedroom window that is always open just a bit. As I reach the porch roof my foot slips and the step ladder falls over, no problem I'm going in the window anyway. Well this just happens to be the morning my wife decides to lock the bedroom window. So there I am sitting on my back porch roof in just my boxers, thank God it was warm out. I waited for about 2 hours when I hear voices in the neighbors yard, Yeah Rescue!! My neighbors daughter was home from college and she had 4 college girlfriends with her, I did not realize this when I called out if someone could come over and set the ladder up. Of course all five of them came running, I honestly think one of then took a video, they could not stop laughing. I did get down but my dignity remained on the roof.

Those were the hays used for recruiting visits, so they were all extra...they’re in a vacant room around the corner from that video on 4th Stoop. How they got away with it for so long I don’t know, but the rumor is it wasn’t with out a lot of confinement and penalty tours.
