I got mail today!

bzmom, so spill the details for us! Was he eating well, resting, sore as all crazy, needing any band-aids yet (grin)? Had to feel awesome that a letter came. Be sure & save it as they get computers on Monday so emails will be the norm. Almost kinda sad because the written letters are so priceless. Oh well. As long as we know they are alive I guess its all good. :thumb:

We got mail!

Quite a long letter, hard to read b/c it was written in the dark while he waited to take his watch (his roommate had the first watch and he didn't think it was worth it to try to sleep for an hour) so he was pretending to sleep when the DI's walked by.

He said he was getting enough to eat and his table head let them eat "normally". He actually likes drilling; finds it hard not to know what time it is, not wearing a watch, and finds it hard to change uniforms in 2 minutes time. (This doesn't surprise me - this is the kid who I swear took 5 minutes to put his socks on in the morning getting dressed for school!)

He won a teeny, tiny Snickers bar (which he shared with his roommate) the first day for losing his voice - showed motivation, but got IT (which I gather is physical punishment - pushups, etc.) for talking in the bathroom.

He had no trouble passing his initial fitness test, but barely passed his swim test without his BCD and fins (scuba gear). But passing is passing, no extra points for style!

He doesn't find the yelling and screaming to be any big deal - on a par with the USCGA's summer AIM program.

He asked us to send a goodie box, some sewing things and a navy blue swimsuit (which puzzles me - didn't they issue a sewing kit and a swimsuit?)

I think he's a little homesick, contemplating how long it will be before he sees us, but basically doing fine.

writing in the head

Well mine (letter) was legible but he confessed to writing in the head to prevent yelling. Creative I say! Proud mom:thumb:

Got a letter

He said he was writing in the dark due to zero free time

Food is good, dinner the best...almost as good as mine....lol
3-5 min to shower with 15 other guys and 6 shower heads
He went to Mass Sunday
Found a kid he played football against, a rival team and have become friends
Not having a problem with physical expectations
Finding it hard not to crack a smile or chuckle when DI's are screaming in his face
The thing that meant the most was the first line of the letter was..." Mom I love you, I am fine and we packed everything I need, not missing anything so stop worrying" He knows me so well!

There is a new way to address envelopes....Candidate.......Platoon ..... then the address didn't know anything about that???? Anyone else know this?

I got mail today!! It is a good feeling :shake: He wrote about his first 3 days of indoc. He's doing well but very tired...

swimsuits

I called the office of the commandant today to ask if I needed to send DS a swim suit. I was told that they would be issued to candidates and that there was an oversight. No need to send one.

Also, got a letter from my DS yesterday. He thinks the food is great, the waterfront is awesome and everything is ok too. He is not worried about making it through indoc and is looking forward to the next phase. They made him a squad leader and he says he rarely gets yelled at. It'll be nice to get that phone call on Sunday.

I've got no idea about the swim suit. But my daughter did request sewing supplies even though they issued a sewing kit. The way she put it was she wanted decent needles and thread and scissors that cut. She was also not satisfied with the brush they issued in the shoe shine kit. Her Dad is retired Army and I sew, so I figured it was because she was spoiled, used to having good tools.

I'm glad to hear that you are all getting such positive letters! Hang in there for the phone call!

Forum Down?

I just read: "Service Academy Forums will undergo site maintenance on Sunday, July 19th starting at 2030 hours EST. We expect to be back up no later than 0200 on Monday, July 20th."

:confused:Oh dear how will we INDOC OCDers or Stalkers of Candidates survive the 5 1/2 hours without this site. :eek:Facebook here we come!

Thank you for the new Blog Referral

Just what we need anther place to spend all day not doing our work....still fulfills the need to talk to someone who is going through this and there aren't many here in the lanclocked middle of the US of A with a kid at KP or the other academies either for that matter.

THANKS! Now we will make it through the down time tomorrow

letter was check off I wrote

Sorry. You may get the phone call tomorrow though. The letter I got was just a check off, fill in the blank page that I gave him after I copied it off the parent website and addressed it to myself. He loves/hates it and isn't getting enough sleep. That would be just about the sum total :)

btw I know where my bread is buttered as they say I made one for the GF so she will feel indebted to me and call me after her phone call tomorrow.

I know better than to expect mail. This is the son who finished his HS graduation thank you notes 8 hours before reporting for Indoc. However, I am looking forward to the phone call tomorrow!

Finally

Well we got our letter today. First name on the envelope his sister but that is great. Nothing specific about how he is doing but he sounds tired. He went to sleep away camp every summer for 11 years so he is just thinking he is away at camp. This letter was actually better than any letter in the years he was at camp. Hope everyone enjoys the phone call tomorrow!!!

I got a letter today also!
i was in tears through the whole thing!

ahh.!
im the happiest person in the world!!

Letter Today in Olympia, Washington

DS says he is "having a good time," but really tired. They are on the go from 5am to 10 pm, plus watch-standing every other night. His roommate (Third Company) has been targeted by one of the DI's after he did one small thing wrong. He is spending a lot of his time trying to help out his roommate, but I guess that is what teamwork is all about. I am sure there will be plpenty of times when he will need help from his companymates (is that the right word?) Now they are all working really hard to memorize the name, rank, and position of every first classman at the academy, as they are going to be tested on that knowledge soon. Aren't there 200 or so firsties? Makes my head spin! Counting down to that phone call!!

S He loves/hates it and isn't getting enough sleep. That would be just about the sum total :)
I have bad news folks.....This is probably the most sleep they will ever get while they are physically at KP. As for those mean DIs and officers... they go to bed a couple of hours after them and wake up at least an hour before them
