A special welcome to all the new members we have been seeing over the past few days. This is a huge time in everyone's life parents and children alike and I think you will find this site to be a great support group for everyone.

The forum is here for you. Post, ask questions, give advice and most of all enjoy your time here. We have a handful of Kings Point 'old-timers' around here including two of us on the moderating staff: myself, a 2001 graduate, and Jamzmom who is the mother of a 2009 graduate. We hope you hang around and please pass the word on to other parents.

Band company for non bandplayers

Mr. Super Moderator or other informed parents.
Our son doesn't play an instrument, but has sung throughout high school in choir and the musicals. Do you suppose that is why he is placed there? He is interested in the waterfront sports. Can anyone fill me in ACCURATEly about the experiences that KP p.c. and plebes have in the band company barrack? Are instruments practiced on in the rooms during the day or do the players go else where? Rack priviledges are given those on crew, so how does that work out if people are practicing their instruments? Thanks!

There are any number of reasons why people who don't play instruments are placed into band company. Sometimes it can be as simple as them saying "yes" when asked at the band co table during inprocessing. Other issues such as logistics can play a role. During indoc it could be they simply needed to place some people in band co due to room limitations.

Band company practices each morning in the band room in Bowditch Hall. I don't think any of them practice in their rooms unless they are working on personal projects. During the day there is too much else going on for them to practice all the time in the dorms as people need to concentrate on their studies.

Don't stress too much about where they are placed during Indoc. Several people will change assignments and although usually you stay with where you are initially put many will flux depending on how many people leave during Indoc or shortly thereafter.

Thank you

Thank you Super Moderator for your words, some of which I had thought about already! I'm confident that after the long hard work our son put in completing the processes of applying through accepting an appointment he will adjust no matter where he is placed. I didn't realize that people were allowed to leave during the indoc weeks!

kp2001 is correct. Band Co. practices in their band room. They will not practice in their barracks rooms because the instruments stay in the Band room. There were one or two PCs last year who were placed in Band who didn't play instruments beforehand. It does happen.

Our daughter is in Band Co. She was also on a varsity sports team all three seasons. There were some conflicts, but she worked things out. It was stressful. She was extremely busy. But she made it through Plebe year and will be back on the sports teams. She is not the only Band member to play varsity sports. Please do not believe the horror stories mids tell about Band Co. Mids telling those stories are usually not in Band Co. and it is the perception from the outside. While there are times our daughter is frustrated with being in the Band, she is happy to be in the company.

As for people leaving, I guess there are always some. I know there were a few last year. There also will be some who leave immediately after indoc. Everything is complicated by the ongoing construction. Who knows what will happen when they change rooms after Indoc.

I see band company has been brought up on this thread so I hope you don't mind another question! If our plebe candidate is not interested in being in the band but is placed in band company anyway, do they have to stay past indoc? Thanks so much!

There are ways of getting out of different companies. I wouldn't worry about it too much right now as there are "bigger fish to fry" but company reassignments can happen.

Thanks so much for the reply! I know he's where he needs to be right now. Us parents just need to chill a bit!

McMom -- spoke to several current Mids and they said that your son should go directly to his CO right after indoc and tell him/her that he does not want to be in Band Co. But, you may find out that after Indoc he may want to stay in Band. The kids form a great bond during indoc and a love for their companies. Don't fret about it too much; he will figure things out.

Thanks for the info kpmom! I will mention that to my pc only if he says he doesn't want to be in band. Who knows he may end up loving it! I just know he's a big sports nut played 4 different varsity sports in high school.

Skype

I know this has been answered but I can't find the response when I scan back through all the posts from this week. What is Skype and how do we find it/use it?
Thanks!

Can anyone fill me in on what Beat Retreat is?

Unfortunately at the moment with the construction going on in Murphy Hall (the largest barracks), your son/daughter will probably not be able to transfer out of band company at all. In fact, they are moving approximately 60 additional people into band company and 2nd company after indoc due to the lack of rooms in the rest of the regiment. Hopefully everything will be sorted out when Murphy Hall re-opens (scheduled for the beginning of 2nd trimester in November), but until then, I seriously doubt that anyone will be able to leave band company. There are some people who live in band company, but do not participate in band events with the rest of the band due to their lack of musical knowledge, so maybe your mid will be placed into that category.

Beat Retreat is a musical program put on primarily by the USMMA Regimental Band (Band Co). Last year at Parents Weekend, our first, there was also dance routine by other midshipmen done to some of the music and the Nassau County Police Bagpipes & Drum Band joined the Regimental Band. For Parents' Weekend the Beat Retreat is held in O'Hara - the fieldhouse/gym. This year the Band will also be performing Beat Retreat on Sunday at Battery Park for the Crown Prince of Holland with the Royal Dutch Marine Band.

I've noticed we've several new KP members joining over the last few days. Tis the INDOC season! Thanks for joining the family here at Service Academy Forums. KP Hint #306 - No news is always good news. Hang tough and wait for the new photos to get posted. You may not see many smiles at this point but they will come. Your Candidates are in the best of hands.

Thank you for these reassuring words and thoughts. I was unable to view my son when he passed through those gates and I still have no clue as to what company he is in. I've been searching the pictures and to my dismay they all look the same :-( I can't wait for Sunday and our first phone call.

Hang in there

Hang in there landslide63. All those shaved heads can start to look alike! Our DS plays tenor sax and there were only 3 or 4 of them last year so we'd say: "Well one of those cue balls with the sax is him!"

My son just received his appointment last week for the class of 2016. Anything he should be doing besides his physical training and academics to prepare between now and indoc.?
