GAP Year?

Hello,
I’m currently CPR with Congressional Nom PA for the class of 2023. I’ve been wondering what is acceptable after a TWE if I want to reapply the following year. Originally my plan was to do some Lay Missionary work for my church in hopes of understanding and strengthening my faith. But recently (from reading similar posts) I’ve begun to understand that the best choice for reapplicants seems to be taking similar college courses to that of a plebe at a civilian 4 year college. Would taking a Gap Year be a bad decision if I want to reapply to the Academy?
Thank you in advance for the advice!

Local Mission related Community Outreach can help you take your mind off of the monotony and stress of college. If you receive the TWE and you are considering reapplying for admission, I think you should request a meeting with an Admission Board member to go over your file to see where you can make improvements. (You can probably do the meeting over Skype if you are too distant.)

None of us here know you well enough to help guide you in the ways of your heart …. But if you decide to start classes right away, you can use your Free time between your school work doing local mission related activities, Helping others, and learn more about yourself too.

There is a sticky at the top of the Forum discussing Reapplication. There is a lot of good information there. While your desire to strengthen your faith is admirable, it is unlikely to improve your chances for appointment next year.

Talk with your BGO to see if they can give you some candid feedback on what you need to improve. You might be able to get some feedback from Admissions, but keep in mind that they can't give individual feedback to the roughly 15,000 applicants that don't get in each year. Absent any direct feedback, follow the guidance in the Sticky -- go to a 4 year college, take a rigorous STEM curriculum, and do well. DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT so you standout -- submitting the same application a year later is unlikely to yield results.

Not sure anyone on the admissions board would have the time to go over an individual candidate application. I would talk with BGO as @Old Navy BGO recommended and also review the Sticky advice.

@A6E Dad (BGO). His DS was a college reapplicant, and mentions in the 2 week old Thread "will USNA provide feedback after a TWE?" the following:

'... As NavyHoops says, it's a very good idea to reach out to your admissions rep, though some may be more accommodating or helpful that others.
In the case of my DS, he was a successful college re-app, who had a very good experience working with his admission rep. It may not work for everyone, but after the TWE he made an appointment and visited admissions during his April break . The admissions rep went through his app and spend about 40 min talking about his application, his college options and what to work on in the new application. He kept in touch and got feedback from the rep in August when it came time to selecting freshman courses.
...
...'

This struck me too ....

i included the caveat "though some may be more accommodating or helpful that others", your mileage may vary. talking to your BGO is also a very good idea.

also, i was referring to your assigned admissions rep, not an admissions board member, though that's probably not what you meant.

as Old Navy mentions, they certainly don't have time to talk to 15k applicants. but, there are only about 6000 candidates that actually finish the application. Since 1500 get an offer, and another 300 get a NAPS/Foundation offer, there are only about 4200 candidates from which would be the pool of likely re-applicants. Only a fraction of that 4200 is going to go through the whole process again (1000? 1500? who knows).

the point is, admissions reps (mostly 0-3s) are often very happy to talk to re-applicants and offer advice, but again, your mileage may vary.
