Medical Waiver for Body Fat?

Hello all,
As we approach the highly anticipated appointment wave, I’m beginning to get even more anxious about my application journey.

Back in December, I was asked to take the body fat test (Form O-220) because I was outside the weight limit for my height. I ended up with 31% when the maximum for females was 26%.

I didn’t hear from USAFA since then until a week ago when they asked me to take another body fat. According to the admissions website, if they deemed one competitive in all other fields, they can ask for a medical waiver and/or re-measurements. I took the test again and this time ended up 5 pounds below the max weight but at 28% body fat (according to the online calculator I used).

I was just wondering, has anyone gone through the same situation as me? I am under the weight limit but not the body fat (even though I’m just 2% over), and what gives me a little hope is that Admissions can still request a medical waiver for me.

If anyone has gone through similar experiences, please share, anything to ease my anxiety will help!

Well, my understanding is that they go by the weight limit first. If you meet it, you're good. I not then they use the body fat. I think you'll be OK but I can't claim to be an expert on the topic. Apparently they are interested enough to ask you to do it again.

Was not asked for a remeasure, but did was granted a body fat waiver as I was 16 pounds over my weight limit but only 20% bodyfat 2% above the limit for males. So you should be good if your body fat is only 2% above the limit if you were otherwise competative enough for a remeasure. But the standards might be a little different for me because I am applying as an enlisted airman.

What was the approximate timeline of events from taking your body fat test to receiving a medical waiver? How long did it take for admissions to notify you that they’ve requested a waiver for you and how long did it take for DoDMERB to approve it? Thank you!

I recieved the request for measurements on 28 Nov 2018 and submitted the next day and on 30 Nov 2018 I recieved the notification that "you body fat is outside of USAFA standards". Then on 7 March 2019 I recieved the waiver.

Wow so it took awhile for the waiver to come in! Did Admissions ever notify you that they’ve put in a waiver request?

No, here is a screen shot of my admissions portal mailbox, aditionally I never recieved email notification that they put in the request. My medical status both on the portal and the DODMERB site said qualified this entire time though.

USNAHopeful. what calculator did you use? Try your measurements according to 36-2905. I can plug in the measurements for you if you'd like. I had to fill out that form as well. I would assume USAFA goes based off of an AFI. If you were under the max weight the second go around you should be fine. They go based off of the weight and then body fat, so you should be good

My DD had the same issue but also had to get a waiver for psoriasis (which she was never officially diagnosed with). She did the tape test and was over. She hasn’t been asked to re-tape yet. Luckily, she also has lost weight and is below the standard now. She is showing as medically qualified now but I think that has more to do with the waiver. Not sure how this works from here for her.

Thank you and congratulations! I haven’t heard back from USAFA , which I usually do after the body fat test so I’m not sure what to think. Fingers crossed that I receive a waiver soon before all the appointments start pouring in!

I used the Navy body fat calculator that I found on google.

DS was flagged for out of range BMI, his height is 5'7" weight is 162..................... his body fat is 9%. Had him taped for the formality and all was good. Turn around was less than one week once the O-220 was submitted.

So if you take the measurements that were taken on you. You add your butt and waist measurement and then subtract the neck for a value. An example would be 34+34-15=53. If your value is over 54.50, then you're over 26 percent. I thought I was a bit over the body fat percentage according to the navy calculator, but the academy said I was within standards. If you would like to see the specific value google AFI 36-2905. It is in the bottom of the attachments, should be like 19 or 20. I hope this helped out a little. Since you were within weight the second time though, then you should be good.

I did the calculations and ended up at 55.5, what body percentage would that be?

It was at 28% so the calculator was right but hopefully they’ll take your weight since it’s within tolerance

I hope so too. I took the exam exactly one week ago and I haven’t received any messages like last time when I came out to 31%, I’m hoping that means I passed? Fingers crossed but thanks for your help!

DD had this exact situation last year. I agree with Kinnem. First is weight. since you're under, I think you're fine.
