USMMA Flu?

I'm not tracking here...can I ask for a rewording of the question?

Many insurance policies are different. A parent may have a policy with a very high deductible or a low lifetime maximum benefit, or they may have a very high co-pay.

How can a parent be expected to pay for services rendered under a policy held by the parent without disclosing exactly what services were performed?

The Academy recommends that Midshipmen maintain insurance while enrolled because their status as reserve officers does not entitle them to unlimited medical care at the government's expense. This is intended as a safety net in the event that a gap occurs between the students needs and what the Academy provides. It also helps to provide additional protection while they are at sea. The need for this is pretty rare. The Academy provides care for the overwhelming number of cases.

Back to topic:

MOST of it is difficult, and not pleasant to watch--although the outcome is more that you could have imagined.

And the biggest shocker when we went through this... no more pictures posted on the parents page after Indoc. I was just getting USED to it.

I quickly became one of the "Where's Waldo" parents. And, frankly, it has been a little counterproductive......even more so for my wife. I know that if there was a genuine need for me to be informed of something, the communication would happen.

I know this will not be the popular opinion but, If I had a vote, I would vote for no pics of INDOC and no phone calls......until after INDOC..... Then our little darling could tell us what he needs and what we can send to fill that need.

Don't need to see the hot iron, just the finished polished steel.

A thought for my son: Hopefully the flu is under control.......Do better today than yesterday!

*I* wore out the F5=refresh button, looking for updated pics. "Is that the corner of his ear.. looks like his ear, behind the line of other kids doing pushups." (actual statement , although my wife is the ear expert).

Over on CC, if you want a laugh... look up F5 or REFRESH... you'll see PLENTY of my posts as I came to grips with the process. Parent2013 (and others) are actually quite ahead of the curve... you've all got good attitudes. REMEMBER that, for later.

Best to you all.

I had to chuckle at the ear statement. I too have been looking for any sign of my kid in a line however distant the picture may be. I was thinking to my self "why don't I have the back of my son's head memorized, what's wrong with my Mom instincts when I don't spot which bald kid is mine immediately"? Oh well, it's easier now when the band has their instruments in tow. I just look for the silver sax though I don't know exactly how many are using the same instrument! Couldn't be too many!

I sure do appreciate all the support on this forum from other parents in the same boat and especially those who have been there done that, seen it, know it!! This place is my lifeline since my son left the nest for KP! :thumb:

Thanks to everyone for their support and stories. I agree that we are at the point tht no news is good news. Our son told us in his phone call that he was feeling some flu symptoms and that he sprained his ankle. Now that is the majob focus of my thoughts. In all likelyhood he will be ok. The flu (if he even gets it) will be mild and his ankle will be ok quickly. With no phone call I would have no worries. So I appreciate no news.

Again thanks to everyone.

Larry

I spoke to my son (2011) working the waterfront this summer today (I had sent him a new cell phone which forced the call!) and he laughed when I asked if there was a huge flu problem there. He said "no mom, it's SARS! We're all gonna die!" OK, so by the fact that he is teasing me I know that everything is fine. He said some are in quarantine but they have an EMT staying with them. He said "everything is under control, DON'T WORRY"
I hope this helps relieve some anxiety.

flu sickness

Hi, I am very new to all of KP and was wondering if my pc son is hospitalized or in sick bay, will he be counted as completing indoc or will he have to repeat indoc next summer after the school year? I hope that KP would not hold getting the flu against them personally.

I remember my father had his appendix out in boot camp (50 ish years ago) and he was done. Any advice????

Local facility

What is the name of the medical facility they are taken to if they need hospitaliztion?

Not so much help

So if you have a kid that won't speak up when he feels bad and has a history of fever spiking to 105 in a second....any advice there? I understand you have done this before...great but....they graduated a month ago and who is to say they are at the point to say " hey my fever is pretty high but I don't want to say anything I'm sure it's nothing " They don't just grow up over night especially with medical and health issues???? They think they are in destructable and can conquer the world until they get sick and no one really knows the history except parents....

parents rights

How can a parent be expected to pay for services rendered under a policy held by the parent without disclosing exactly what services were performed?

Sorry guys but even outside the Academies and Government for adolescent children frequently the situation is the parent is obligated to pay the bill and by law cannot be informed of any medical information without the consent of the adolescent. Specific ages and diagnosis vary by state. It can be a real problem in a doctors office on the surface but usually the "patient/child" can be convinced that parents will know soon enough (think pregnancy) and consent is usually given. Lack of knowledge or consent does not get you out of the bill though. Most doctors office know if the child comes by him/herself it is going to be hard to collect on the payment. Hospitals are more likely to push collection.

i found the following information in another thread:
Please know it is from our 17 year old that self admittedly was feeling pretty good because they had just given him "medicine"........but, it sure seems like more than a small issue for a few of these candidates.

We just got a call from our son. He was diagnosed with the flu and has been quarantined for 7 days per CDC guidelines. He happens to be in Third Co., but is in quarantine with 25 other PC's from various companies. The are in good spirits, he said they have dubbed themselves "Sick Co." and have even made a flag and a makeshift guidon. He was put in quarantine yesterday. They are being housed above the clinic. (the word from Sunday's call should have been "isolation"....Third Co. was in isolation lockdown....not quarantine.) He said they were told they were not going to have to repeat INDOC, but they have ask a lot of questions that have not been answered yet. He said they really felt bad because, it appeared they had weathered the worst of INDOC and now some "fun" things were looming and they were missing out. Oh well. No whites issued or measured for yet. No khaki pants just shirts. No real waterfront time and no hands on offshore, like some others have experienced. Call was over 10 minutes. They are not permitted to participate in any physical training, so he is getting caught up on his bearing book knowledge along with senior class roster exercise. He is quite concerned about getting weak by being in the bed for a week, then having to take the 5K run with the Alumni on Aug 1 and PFA/BCA on Aug 3.

Lots of questions for you all out there. Computers on Monday. He won't be out of quarantine. Registration day is Monday. He won't be out of quarantine. I have more questions than need to be asked here.....please all you graduates, experts, flight surgeons etc. etc. out there, tell us, from your experienced perspective, whatever comes to mind. THANKS!

Let's just say this isn't the first time the school has been at this "dance."

The people who are isolated will have a bit of an "altered" indoc; however, no need to worry about other things at this point. If they were in decent shape coming in they will still be able to meet the minimums for the physical fitness test. If they don't I'm sure accomodations will be made for those who may have been sick....if not it simply means they'll have to repeat the test after a little "remediation." No biggie.

As to the "registration" well that's a joke at KP, unlike other schools where you actually have to sign up for classes the classes at KP are instead assigned to you. As a plebe you pretty much have zero choice. Later years will get you an elective here or there, but for the most part your schedule appears in your mailbox and that's what it is. There are of course other things to do like get your ID and a few other logistical issues that will be worked out.

As for the computers...well those are almost treated like a privilige so it may be they simply hold their computers until out of isolation. It's unfortunate this happened and they will have a little "altered" view of Indoc, but tis a minor bump in a very, very long road.

As to the worries about them not knowing when to seek medical....they will be ordered to go to medical if it looks like they need it. There are many, many EMT's around campus and the candidates are checked on nightly and throughout every day even when there isn't an illness running around. They are in good hands. Just wait until they are on a ship in the middle of the ocean and the most trained medical person is themselves because they took a ship's medicine class at Kings Point.

I can't wait to see what happens when all the "real" colleges start bringing in their freshman. So far flu in at least 3 of the service academies, my bet is that we see all sorts of sensationalized reporting when the other colleges start up.
