Still Waiting

Hey, my application is done and has been done for over a month now and nowhere does it say hold on my status. It just says my candidate ID. Is this normal?

Yes, that is normal. For those who got their applications in early, the transition to being found qualified and achieving "hold" status is usually quicker. Also, not everyone will see a hold status step. Some applicants receive an offer of appointment without being on hold. Hang in there!

Still on Hold Status and 3Q. Do you think the 2023 class will be as large as the 2022 class at 280 reporting in? At this stage how many appointments have typically been offered? Talking with my DS this afternoon and he is hoping this wait doesn't stretch out into May. He is worried about plan B and May 1st deadline for the other colleges that have offered him. I told him come May 1st he accepts the offer for his 2nd school if we have not heard from USMMA, but let School B knows he is waiting to hear from USMMA and if we can back out and only lose our deposit.

As an educated guess, I would say this class will be at least as big as 2022. The new superintendent is not giving as many chances to those mids who are failing multiple classes and failing sea projects. It seems like more mids are being separated from the academy after last trimester and last sea year. That leaves more room for the incoming class. I would say the 280 figure is a good low end estimate.

The first part of this sounds like a lot of hearsay and speculation. The supe just allowed a mid I knew whom we all thought was getting kicked out 95% with a big case against him to stay. People are separated on a case by case basis. The class size has been 280 for the past 2 years, it will probably be 280 this year. It was less in previous years because of renovations in progress, it will probably be 280 for 2023 as well.

No, my post is not based on "heresay and speculation," but I cannot be more specific without identifying my source(es). Yes, the separation decisions are made on a case by case basis; just be aware that there will definitely be less leniency going forward.

I have some comments and questions concerning the 2022 profile at: https://www.usmma.edu/class-profile. It says 408 appointments offered, 110 Declined Principal Appointment and 280 reported in. 408 - 110 = 298. What about the other 18 appointments? I assume the academy ends up offering more appointments than it can actually admit because of the candidates that decline open up slots. Also if 557 Met Selection Criteria and 408 appointments were offfered doesn't that means 149 (557 - 408 = 149) of the cadidates meeting selection criteria were not offered; correct? That is a 73% (408/557) acceptance rate for those meeting selection criteria. Also found this graph interesting showing some low GPA and ACT scores that were accepted: https://www.thoughtco.com/usmma-gpa-sat-and-act-data-786545. Thoughts?

I personally was worried about the GPA of my own DS. He used to tell me not to worry and that GPA is not that important, because he is taking challenging classes.
You should not look at the GPA and ACT alone. In the article you quoted there is a sentence in the second paragraph - "Grades and test scores, however, are just part of the application. "
Lower unweighted GPA from a high school student taking more demanding classes paired with AP classes, more than 5 for example including Calc I, Calc II, Physics, Chemistry etc. is not comparable to higher GPA from a high school student taking "easier" or less demanding classes, like Dance, Drama, Poetry etc. Not saying that the latter are not important, but everyone makes choices and has different subject inclinations.
There might be some family circumstances, work, sport involvement, which might have prevented the student to achieve higher GPA. GPA is GPA. You cannot fix it since it is a cumulative and you cannot go back. SAT, ACT, extracurricular involvement on the other hand could be improved or enhanced.
Just wanted to add my 2 cents.
Good luck.

Well.. it's the end of the road for our DS.. On to plan B! Texas a&m maritime or SUNY maritime. Thanks to everyone for answering our questions a long the way. Good luck to everyone that is still waiting.

Oh, I'm sorry. Those are both great schools though and will get him to the same endpoint.

I was denied last year from hold status to "qualified not accepted" so I chose to apply again this year and I was placed on HOLD and received an email about it. Checked my status about a week ago and my HOLD status is no longer there anymore. It's just blank next to "application status".....weird.

I would call your admissions representative and ask. They have always been very helpful in my experience. Good luck!

The same happento my DS. He was placed on HOLD and received an email about it saying he was on NWL. Some weeks ago checked his status and HOLD was no longer there anymore. It wast blank next to "application status". He e-mailed his admin rep and was told not to worry. If status changed he would receive a new letter.
