Disenrollment Investigation

Hello everyone,

As some of you know may know, SFT EA slots dropped this week. My Det/CC called and told me that I didn't get one and will soon be under disenrollment investigation, since I'm also contracted AS200. I really don't know what's going to happen and some peers/friends have told that it may not be final, but it's all, of course, unpredictable and out of my control.

It's all due to my academic performance, which I admit it's my fault. I've gotten 2 Academics CE, and failed the AFOQT the 1st time, and later passed the 2nd time. I've been reprimanded by the Det/CC a few times, thus bringing down my Commander's ranking. Overall, it's been a walk on thin ice at this. I came here hoping to get further guidance and information on the situation and see what my possibilities are.

So far, I met the requirements to go to SFT, but as I said, it's not the best.
These are my stats:

GPA: 2.2
FA avg scores: 85-90

I'd agree-- you are in bad shape, and I think you know that. The good news is that you still have some solid options remaining for you.

The questions you need to answer are:

(a) Did you go ROTC to pay for school or to join the service?
(b) How sold are you on joining the AF?
(c) How sold are you on finishing your degree?
(d) How sold are you on serving in the military in general?

I'm assuming you (a) have an AFROTC scholarship, and (b) will have to pay it back. Neither is necessarily the case, I know, but in lieu of additional information, I'll assume the "worst case" outcome-- disenrollment and recoupment of scholarship funds due to breach of contract (CGPA <2.5)

If military service is your goal: My advice-- and I'm sure I will get a lot of pushback on this-- withdraw from college, withdraw from ROTC and enlist in ADAF. Focus on being an outstanding enlisted Airman, make some money, gain experience, and after a year or two, start working toward your degree again. Take it slow and focus on earning A's and knocking out classes. After your initial enlistment is up (assuming 4 years), you will have the GI Bill to finish your degree and you can apply for OTS as a much more viable officer candidate. The best part is that you can petition HQ AFROTC to allow you to repay your debt via enlistment in lieu of fiscal recoupment.

If being a military officer (and never being enlisted) is your goal: Go talk to the Army. Sell them on taking you. Figure out how you are going to pay back your scholarship. If AROTC won't take you, go talk to a recruiter about Warrant Officer Candidate School. You can go straight into WOCS as an NPS candidate if you qualify for aviation. In some ways, the Army can be a little more forgiving than the AF (in others they are not, so YMMV). If the Army won't take you, then go talk to Navy. If you attending an HBCU, talk to the Coast Guard about CSPI.

If your degree is more important than military service: Fight to stay in AFROTC as long as you can while figuring out how to repay the debt (and fund future classes). Slow down your degree progression until your grades begin to recover. Graduate and press on in civilian life.

Good luck!

As stated you will almost definitely have to repay the debt. This is a conversation you should have with the folks. Were you contracted the entire 2 yrs., or because your cgpa is below 2.5 did they pull the scholarship for any semester. HQ AFROTC will charge you interest, and typically want it repaid within 4 yrs. You may need to hire an attorney if they slap you with these terms.
~ Many cadets that were hit with thebill were able to negotiate the pay back terms from 4 yrs to as high as 10.

I would do this while simultaneously you:
1. Creating a well thought out defense to submit to HQ
~ Was there some hardship that the det. did not know about. When I say hardship, I don't mean it was hard to transition as a freshmen. More like, a family member was seriously ill for the last 2 yrs., and you did not inform the unit bc you felt it was a private matter.
~ Academically, you hired a tutor for assistance, but since you were a scholarship cadet you knew that you were going to need HQ AFROTC to switch from tech to non-tech and that is a rarity. Or hopefully, maybe your academics was low only your freshmen yr., and since that time every semester your gpa has been increasing dramatically. Thus, you can say, by this time next yr you expect your cgpa to be above 2.8.
~~ Personally, your gpa was not the only thin, nor probably the biggest reason impo. AFOQT scores are part of the WCS for SFT, and you know that is the equivalent to an SAT/ACT for the AF. I don't know how you can address that in your defense. I am sure you know your PFT is way low. Let's be honest, 95 is an avg score and most competitive cadets pull 97-98 (sorry). This will be a concern for them when reviewing your records. HQ knows SFT is held at Maxwell in the summers where the temp can be 90-100 degrees with 75% humidity. You need to pass the PFT there to pass SFT.
2. Talk to your financial aid dept. and again, your folks
~ Is it too late to apply for school loans or grants for the Fall?
~ Have they filled out their FAFSA?
3. If you are willing to serve in any branch, look into AROTC
~ Many AFROTC cadets do jump over to AROTC if not selected for SFT.
~~ Be prepared to explain your gpa.
~ If you are fortunate enough to be accepted into the program, you really NEED to work out. You don't want to show up in the fall and pull that score, it will be their 1st impression of you.

I wish you the best.

Any minority serving institution, not just HBCU.
True, just HBCU's tend to be the biggest percentage of minority-serving institutions, and they have a convenient acronym for web searches. :)

Complete list of qualifying MSI's is here, item #6 (about 54% down the page).

I know, just wanted to add on in the case OP is at a different one!

CSPI is not easy to get. 2.2 GPA will be a hard sell. (2.5 is the min)Somewhere burried in these forums I want to say 30-60 spots are offered.
