Hi all,
I was just accepted into SLE and was wondering what the acceptance rate is. I tried to look online but nothing comes up, any approximations?
Also, I was offered admission to SLE today, March 15th, but it says that I need to fill out forms by March 9th. What day is it all due since March 9th has already passed?
What is the daily schedule like at SLE?
Can you change your workshop preferences once accepted?
What is the food like, gross?
How much swimming do we do during the week?
What are the classes like?
Answer in as much detail as possible bc I’m super excited!!!! Thanks

Re the deadline that’s already passed, you should be taking that up with USMA directly. We can’t help you here for that one. And I wouldn’t wait another minute.

It's hard to distinguish the acceptance rate like for SLE, but it's a very hard summer program to get into.

In your SLE packet, there is a canned news release that your local news outlet can use should you and your parents want to let the public know of your SLE selection. You just have to plug in your name and school and you’ve got your news release.

In it, I believe it says there were over 6000 applicants for the 1000 slots (500 per session) for SLE. That’s as close to an acceptance rate as you’ll find.

You can not correlate SLE acceptance to academy acceptance as SLE does not require nominations and slating. Getting accepted to SLE is a good sign but is not necessarily a good predictor of the final outcome.

Mod Note:
Moving this to the USMA forum to give it more exposure.

As for the schedule, this was ours for last year (session 2). No amazing quality, but something to look forward to!Snapchat-1457979689.jpeg

thanks man for this. I have also been accepted to the Summer Leadership Experience and can not wait to attend. I was wondering since the first session lasts from the 1-7 is the 1 day, the saturday, the day where everyone arrives and all the fun stuff? Because I was told by West Point that if I land at Newark Air Port that they will pick up people to the camp, if the flight comes in no later than 4pm. I didnt know if this would be 4pm of the first day of the camp, so June 1st or the day before? Didnt know if you knew.

It should be that the flight needs to arrive by 4pm on 01 JUN. The instructions pdf says that reception is from 9am to 3pm on 01 JUN, so you would arrive by 4pm at the airport, and they will drive you to the reception, and folks who arrive later may miss reception i suppose.

Okay thank you, I just want to be sure. Do you know by when we have to send our flight info to the academies?

I see that there's a page on SLE Website with space to submit travel information, but I never noticed a deadline for it. I think they will ask people to fill it out later if it is mandatory. Also, the SLE tab on the USMA portal Website updated and there's a place to enter t-shirt size there.

Can you change your workshop preferences once accepted?
You couldn't last year. Doubt that changed for this year.

What is the food like, gross?
The food is quite good. You eat in the mess hall and eat the same food you'll eat as a cadet. I enjoyed it a lot, though some of it is bland. You have lots of options. You'll get an MRE (unheated) on military day which was probably the least tasty meal of the week :)

How much swimming do we do during the week?
None.

What are the classes like?
Very interesting. Some are more engaging than others. The instructors are actual academic instructors and they are all very excited to speak with you and introduce you to their field. I took Leadership & Ethics, Physics, and Civil & Mechanical Engineering. I'd say the first was the most interesting, the second the most fascinating and educational, and the third the most engaging/hands-on.

Approximate numbers for those who applied were over 8,000+ according to my field force rep. Some areas and districts more competitive than others
