hey im applying to USAFA class of '15. i want to know how competitive i am as of right now and if anyone could give me suggestions please do. I will be a junior in high school this year.
GPA: 3.6 i hope to get this up i know i need to work on it
SAT:
CR: 630
M:660
W: 470 ( ya horrible i know didnt prepare and the clock in the room was stuck on the same minute. Also, i was wondering if usafa considers this score?). I will take the SAT many more times and the ACT also.

I am volunteering at my local VA (Veterans Affairs) hospital and will have 100 hrs by the end of the summer. I am the class president of my class. I will be joining AFJROTC this year and hope to get a leadership position. Also i run XC and track. i will also be trying out for the basketball team this year. if i make basketball i will letter in that and i can probably letter in track.

Something everyone needs to realize it is very difficult to give an honest answer if we don't know your state, the more competitive it is the higher GPA/ SAT you will need with a ton of ECS.

Not knowing if you are taking AP's or honors or std also makes it difficult.

A quick answer without knowing anything you are strong, because of the SAT, track and class president.

ok sorry i will add more information.

almost all my classes are honors and AP. I live in Tennessee so im not sure how competitive it is

UW with honors and APS (like USH, GOVT, ENG, Lit, CALC, PHYSICS... not Human geography) will def be a plus. TN is not a competitive state compared to CO, CA, NY. etc.

I think you are sitting good. Start practicing pull ups so you can hit 18 and max.

ya i've been practicing pullups pushups situps i can run a 5:45 mile probably a 5:30 if i got in shape

Your the class of 2015 also? That is great! I'am too! I hope I see you there! Best of luck to you!

5:45 is close to max, 5:30 is the max, but that won't help you if you can only do 5 pull-ups, 45 push-ups and a 57 for BBall. Work on your weaknesses since running is your strength. You want to hit the CFA out of the ballpark.

75+ push-ups
85+ sit ups
100 BBall
18 pull ups.

Make sure you practice it as they show it, don't take extra downtime, and do it in the worst weather, cold, rainy...hot, humid. Every yr there will be candidates who say I screwed up on my run or shuttle because it was raining, or it was 98 degrees and I did it at 2. The AFA does not recognize that as an excuse because BCT will occur in all types of weather.

You have a long time to practice, don't go berzerk, because the last thing you want to do now is to cause an injury that will be reported to Dodmerb...take it slowly and do it properly.

AIM HIGH...ABOVE ALL

good luck to you also.

thanks Pima i will be sure to get close to max when i do my CFA.

how significant is maxing the cfa, I can only max 2 or 3 events and my basketball throw needs help.
will one bad score hurt the rest of my good ones?

I'm a Cadet at a different academy and the best answer I can give you is to keep taking heavy classes and try your hardest in them. Study hard, get good grads, retake the SAT (your scores are not bad though) and continue doing ECs you enjoy doing. There is no magic formula for this. If you are determined, worst case could be prep school and that isn't a bad deal. ROTC is also an awesome deal. It is a great way to become a commissioned officer.

thanks everyone for suggestions. i was also wondering if my commander in AFJROTC can nominate me?

You can only get a nom from JROTC if it is an "honor" unit. There are limited slots that can be apptd. Also, these noms compete against ROTC cadets.

As far as the CFA, the fact is it is only a % of that 20% of the WCS. This is one part of the applicatiion that you have control over. You don't want to not get an appt and wonder the rest of your life you will say if I had waited and got 5 more push-ups would have my WCS been the winner.

What is your CFA scors right now, because if you max 2 or 3, I am assuming we are looking at shuttle, mile and situps, which means push-ups, pull-ups and bball aren't the AFA might be concerned that you do not have upper body strength,

im going to test myself in a few days on the events. i currently do on my work out days 120 pushups 150 situps and 45 pullups so im training pretty hard

Are your doing the CFA by their regs. I have never known anybody to do 45 pullups in a 2 minute period.(seriously that is 1.125 per second) Same with 150 sit ups,(that is less than 1 a sec), 120 pullups are 1 a second, especially after running 1 mile and a shuttle run. Sorry, but I am also going to be rude at this point, give me an unlimited amount of time and I can do that too.

Finally, the max for pullups is 18, you get the same score whether you do 18 or 19 or 45. Same for running a mile in 5 minutes or 5:30. Go for the max and then save your strength, you get no extra points for passing it, you do have less energy to get your weaknesses to the max.

My impression is that he is saying his work-out consists of those. If that's in a 1 hour period, that's still pretty good for preparing.

I think he is inquiring about an AFJROTC unit and an AFA appointment. The honors units requirement is only for JROTC units nominating to other services. All AFJROTC units can nominate to the AFA.

haha i cant do those in a time period i just mean in like an hour it usually takes. i cant do 45 pullups in 2 mins haha. so mombee jrotc units can nominate directly to the USAFA (would that be considered a service connected nomination or what cause ive never really heard that.

I will defer to mombee since our DS was not in JROTC, but I do know that JROTC and ROTC come out of the same pile. Something anybody applying for a JROTC should realize that some JROTC cadets received the thin letter and reapply as an ROTC cadet. These applicants know where their weaknesses were and took a yr to fix them, so it is not just JROTC trying to get appt with that nom, but ROTC students also!

In DS's school, he was the only one to get all 3 noms, and ROTC scholarship, none of the JROTC got that...it is about your WCS and your resume.

Whole Candidate Score, this is where they take your PAR Prior Academic Record,(gpa, SAT/ACT class rank) and your ECS, recs, CFA to give a point score...highest score wins the apptmt
