USMA TWE Question

Hello all,

Today, I received a TWE from USMA. I was expecting this early on, but I also talked with my FFR about how my application looked ideal for USMAPS. Even though I have a TWE, do you think there is still a chance that I will hear about prep? Or do you think this may be the end for me?
 
No one here knows my friend, especially since we know nothing about you. Your FFR or admissions would be your best source of input on that.
 
My DD just received a TWE in the mail (1/2 hour ago). She is still at school and doesn't know yet. Any chance that this is not a denial?

She received 2 nominations which would have been 3 but our Senators do not overlap nominations. She has held a student government office each year in high school and is Student Body President, Civil Air Patrol Cadet Commander, has a varsity letter in Field Hockey and Softball, has run 1/2 and full marathons, has held every office in 4-H, has won many speech competitions, received numerous awards for leadership and community service, raised over $50,000 for a charity in 10 years, and has an ACT super score of 32 with a weighted GPA of 4.18.

By this I understand you have not opened it? If that's correct, my understanding is that it COULD be a request for something rather than a denial.

As SomeGaveAll, it may be a request for additional info although at this point it is probably a no. I dont mean to be mean, but your post seems like you are appealing the decision and to the wrong people. Or you cant understand how it is possible she got a no with all her achievements. The problem is who knows why they said no. I am sure there are people with a better resume who also got a no and there are people with a worse resume who got a yes.

I can definitely confirm that there are people with a worse resume who got a no, lol. If it is a TWE (and to be perfectly honest, it most likely is), your DD sounds like a great candidate for an AOG scholarship. She would go to to a military junior college as a sponsored cadet. It is referred to as the "golden ticket". My DS had one, went to Marion, and it was the best thing he ever did. He matured immensely, made a tight group of friends who have been excellent support at West Point, and we developed a parent network of some of the best people I know on the planet who love my kid like their own and really watch out for him. Looking back, I can honestly say I am glad my kid did not get direct admit. Have her get in contact with her RC immediately if she is interested and let him know. To paraphrase something someone on here said: when the door closes, start looking for the open window.

Just to be clear, I'm not appealing a decision. I stated the information about my daughter, which isn't wholly inclusive, as an example of her credentials. I wouldn't expect anyone to be able to suggest the letter is not a denial if they have no information on her qualifications. I'm well aware that many highly qualified candidates don't make the cut given that the acceptance rate for USMA is approximately 9.6%. I was simply questioning if anyone had ever had any experience with a TWE not being a denial.

Well said. In my own case, however, I was offered a Civil Prep spot this year without any TWE, but I know how seemingly random the process can be at times.

Thanks for the advice Labrador. She has her Plan B in place already and I'm sure she will execute it once her disappointment wears off. She was awarded a 4 year AROTC scholarship at the first Board and received an acceptance at one of her top choice universities complete with a Merit scholarship for room & board.

About two months ago, DS #2 got a TWE in the mail that turned out to be a request for more information. It scared him to death. Then last week, the real thing arrived. They looked identical. However, there is nothing that can be added to a file at this point, so I think it is a TWE. Sorry, I know the feeling, it is crushing to have them get it, but read my above post. Turn it into an opportunity. There are so many kids who have applied two, three times even before getting in.

Yes, DS received a letter in the mail that was a TWE from Office of Admissions in March and it was his 3Q letter. He also received one in February asking for his English SOE. However, these were both posted in his portal before we received the mail. Everything we have ever received in the mail is also a pdf in his portal, but it sounds like actual declinations don't get posted in the portal, which is really annoying as we are still waiting over here.

Wow! Good for her. She has a great path in front of her as an option. If she is dead-set on West Point, she can always pursue the AOG too. If she is happy with her Plan B, then there you go!

I haven't seen her portal and I know she hasn't checked it since Wednesday. I have no idea why she isn't checking everyday and it's absolutely driving us insane!

Thanks. I'll mention it to her. She said that she would reapply next year if she didn't get in this year. I think she may change her mind once she gets into the swing of her freshman year.

I hear exactly what you are saying. Last year when my DS applied I was sure he would get in because his resume was everything WP asks for - high test scores, high GPA, Eagle Scout, multiple leadership examples, varsity athlete in multiple sports, etc. We went until late April hearing nothing and then the TWE came. I'm not sure who was more surprised, me or him as I had read up on people getting in and he was as good as or better than most of the ones I read and I had just assumed that he would get offered an appointment. He went with Plan B and was going to reapply. Quite honestly, I didn't expect him to finish his application this year because I figured he was happy with Plan B. He finished his application and was offered an appointment this year without making any real improvements to his application over last year. It really is true when they say you have no idea what makes them pick from one year to the next. It is disappointing and a bit humbling to get the rejection letter, but just remember you don't know what they were up against.
