Before this week, many current 3/C MIDN across the country were told that sea trials was the only mandatory thing that rising 2/C MIDN would be doing this summer. A few days ago, it was announced that they will now be doing 2/C cruise along with sea trials.

Posting this for anyone curious who has a 4/C now who is looking towards next summer..

Sea trials is mandatory.

An extra 2/C cruise is optional, such as going on a sub or cortramid if there was someone who picked up a 3 year.

NROTC units do have to send out a certain amount of MIDN to fill in cadre spots for NSI. So that means if there are not enough MIDN volunteering for cadre, then people will be "voluntold."

Yes Sea Trials are mandatory, but as the OP mentioned, rising 2/C found out this week that they must also attend a cruise in conjunction with. I'm certain on this one as I have a rising 2/C who was supposed to study abroad this summer then attend Sea Trials. He had to put in a request to see if the 2/C cruise could be waived so that he could still study abroad. I'm hoping waiver is approved as we already purchased airfare because rates keep going up. This might be a change for this year and did just occur this week in our unit.

As a side note, the term “rising” really doesn’t apply. On Comm Day, they either promote to Ensign or 2nd LT or to the next class. At graduation, you’ll see mids in the stands digging in their pockets to dig out the next class’ shoulder boards. They get those on fast! Shiny new firsties can now drive on the Yard, new 2/c can break out the civvies, etc.

One of the things that doesn’t kick in that day is the service obligation for 2/c. That happens first day of ac year class and is formalized by the “two-for-seven” signing.

Ack - sorry - this applies to USNA. Not sure how it works for NROTC. Note to self, know what forum you are in.

Regarding NROTC, we don't get to "two and screw" now, we're only allowed to "one and done".

The info from Fastfood44 and goirish1 is consistent with what DS found out this week. DS did not do cortramid last year due to a back injury so he was doing it this year. He was told that Sea Trials and what they call the “enlisted cruise” (which is where they shadow an enlisted sailor and learn/do his/her job) is what he will be doing this summer.

Thanks for the info- if I don't get a heads up here, it takes forever to get info out of my dd :) Just found out from her (2/c) she will be doing both sea trials and 2/c cruise as she was told both were mandatory. Hopefully, she will be able to get them around her required summer class, one before and one after- or rather her final exam is the day she would have to fly out.

Only two mandatory cruises are 1/C and Sea Trials. All other ones can be waived due to circumstances approved by the PNS (or it might be your advisor).

No one at my unit is required to attend a 2/c cruise as well. Just sea trials.

I see your DD was born OPSEC like my DS. Makes family events challenging! On a need to know basis, DS believes no one needs to know!

OK, on serious note: this issue is tricky and a common one i bet. Is it possible to go late? we thought Navy would insist on being the higher priority.

DS is trying to fit in a course too, still waiting to hear Cortramid East/West, both sessions overlap his U’s summer sessions. Is asking profs if they’d let him miss the first two days or take the final 3 days earlier. No idea if they’ll accommodate him. With Navy classes it’s impossible to complete his major in 4 y w/o exceeding 20h a sem. Anyone else have/having this issue?and how did you resolve it?

I'm not sure how to resolve it! My DD is taking a summer class at a state school close to home in the summer, just to make sure she can get her requirements in, and bc she registered in Jan, she is able to prove that she is already registered so that she may request the training sessions around her class. It is hard to miss a day or two of summer classes bc they are compressed.

What did DS's cadre tell him? If he's going to make it work he will need to go through them and get their support. Alternatively they might tell him to forget i, can't happen and attendance is requiredt. In some sense summer training is required. However, midshipmen who contract as sophomores do not attend CORTRAMID. If your DS is a Marine Option then CORTRAMID isn't very useful. If he's a Navy Option CORTRAMID is important in becoming more aware of his options when he commissions.

Not sure how everything will play out, but here is what my DS explained to me the other day. Before finding out that the traditional 2/c cruise is going to be required, he had requested an additional 2/c cruise in addition to Sea Trials. He also has a 10 week internship lined up this summer. His class adviser told him he wouldn't be able to do an additional cruise because cruises are assigned during phases with set dates, although some cruises may not actually take up the entire date range of the phase. Since the end of his internship was about 4 days after the beginning of the last phase of cruises, he would not be approved for the additional cruise. He's not sure how everything will shake out now that the additional cruise is mandatory. He's hoping to be assigned a cruise that starts a few days after the phase begins so he can finish his internship or to be able to join the cruise a few days late. If that doesn't happen, he's hoping he can miss the last week of his internship to attend the cruise. He really doesn't want to ask for a waiver to skip the other cruise, because he wants that experience, but the internship is also directly related to his major and would be great experience. Looks like we won't be seeing much of him this summer.

good luck- hope it works out for your son. its so hard to plan anything in the summer, apparently even more so this year! When did he find out it was mandatory? I know my DD was told BOTH were mandatory only this week. she put in her request for the date ranges around the summer class she has to take, so we are hoping it works out for her, too.

DS is a year behind your 2Cs which is why I’m interested in hearing how your DS/DD are handling it. Our DS’ cadre hasn’t said much beyond “mandatory” because (as far as i know) the CORTRAMID assignments haven’t been given yet. We may have found something online to satisfy his U’s requirement but still needs prof to approve late start. Will look into some local public U options (thx for idea above), and whether he can transfer the credits.

I believe he found out late last week or early this week. One way or the other, I'm sure he will figure it out. It's hard to be in the passenger seat these days. I'm a "problem solver" kind of guy, but he seems to be on top of it and thinking about his options.

Not sure what class your DS is planning to take over the summer, but just have him be sure it's something he is allowed to take at his local public U. I remember DS telling me going into last summer that several mids were planning to take calculus or physics classes at their local public U, but were told it would not be accepted. I believe he referenced something in the NROTC regs that said these classes had to be taken at his univesity or one approved by NROTC, due to the variation in the rigor of these courses at various universities.

Good luck.

Nah, it’s a U-required class (like anthropology), not a Navy or major req’d course. He’s working it on his end like yours.... just looking for creative solutions. I’m sure there’s a prof who will be flexible with him, and/or maybe we’ll get lucky and be able to have him home for a few weeks this summer!! Thank you ProudDad17 and Momx3 for the helpful suggestions!
